• Illinois earns the 1st runner-up position for the second time. The last time it was placed in 1997.
• California earns the 2nd runner-up position for the third time and twice in a row.
• Utah earns the 3rd runner-up position for the first time.
• Mississippi earns the 4th runner-up position for the first time.
• States that placed in semifinals the previous year were Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
• Arkansas and California placed for the third consecutive year.
• Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming made their second consecutive placement.
• Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma and Virginia last placed in 2008.
• Illinois last placed in 2007.
• New York last placed in 2005.
• Mississippi last placed in 1998.
