Composition

"Please Me" is a R&B and rap song.[11][12]

It has been described as a "mid-tempo retro groove", as well as a "mix of modern and classic- smooth slow jam with trap stylings".[13][6] According to Rolling Stone, in the lyrics Cardi B and Mars' characters flirt with each other, with him "emotively pleading for some loving" and her answering with the desire of "getting down on the dancefloor before taking it to another level."[14][15] This time, that takes the form of telling her man exactly how their night is going to go down, beginning with “twerkin’ in some J’s on the dancefloor” before moving things to the bedroom.[13]

"The sexy track sees Cardi slowing down her flow as Bruno taps into the classic R&B tradition of "begging for pussy"."[16]

Critical reception

Rhian Daly of NME despiting considering "Please Me" not to be Cardi B's best song as "she's far better when she's got some fire beneath her", she praised it by saying that Cardi B "dominates" the track as most songs have "the man calling the shots". However, Daly felt that the rapper "snatches control while making sure she's getting what she wants too". Daly considered that, Mars' "silky, begging vocals" show "sensual R&B", as Cardi B's rapping is "something far more x-rated".[13] Writing for Pitchfork, Michelle Kim criticized the song, saying Mars "attempts to make his own bump'n'grind anthem" but that "his request feels painfully safe and vanilla, like if a bot was programmed to write sexts". Kim summarized that the song has an "awkward tempo" and is "definitely not sexy enough to be played in the bedroom".[17] "Please Me" that felt perfect for the holiday: horny, performative, a little corny.[18]

Tara Martinez found "Please Me" to be "extremely suggestive" and "unapologetically sexy". She said the lyrics were written "to make you feel your own body temperature rise".[19]

In 2019, "Please Me" was nominated for Best Collaboration at the BET Awards 2019.[20] The song was nominated for Best Collab, Duo or Group at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards.[21] It also received a nomination for Best Collaboration Performance at the 2019 Soul Train Music Awards.[22] In 2020, "Please Me" received two awards from ASCAP, one from the Pop Music Awards, as it was one of the winners of Most Performed Song, and another from the Rhythm & Soul Music Awards, also as one of the receivers of Winning R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.[23][24] The track also won a BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards at the BMI Awards.[25]

Music video

Background

After releasing the song on February 15, 2019, Cardi B promised her fans that a music video would be released soon.[44] Later, on March 1, 2019, Cardi B made a video announcement stating "she really loved what they did for this video". She added while laughing, "I really just wanted to do a video because I'm really feelin' myself". The accompanying music video was shot in Los Angeles and premiered at 10 a.m. EST on the aforementioned date. It was directed by Florent Dechard and Mars, while it was choreographed by the latter, along with Tanisha Scott and Phil Tayag.[11][45] In the music video, Cardi B is wearing a purple leather jacket with fringe and a bustier. It was inspired by Selena's look during her performance at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, Texas, 1993, the cover of Selena's live album, Selena Live! (1993) and her wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hollywood.[46][47]

Synopsis

The music video starts with a message to set the location in Los Angeles, after the party at a taco restaurant.[11][19][48] In the "neon-lit" music video Mars, with a pencil-thin mustache, and his friends are "sitting down" eating tacos, when Cardi B, holding a lollipop in her hand, enters the restaurant with her friends.[49][44][50] The latter is saying to one that she "should've slapped that bitch", who was talking "wild crazy", referencing to a previous incident.[44][16] At this point, Cardi B and Mars exchange glances, while they are hanging with their respective group of friends, nothing moves and "then the beat drops".[11][48][16] Then, Cardi B and her quartet of friends a choreography in order to draw Mars' and his friends attention.[11] Afterwards, Mars and Cardi B are seen making "their way toward one another", along with several "suggestive dances and scenarios", with Cardi B "twerking on the store counter, grinding on Mars, and sitting atop a slushy machine."[11][44][48] Mars and his crew also perfom a choreography to impress Cardi B and her friends.[11][51] The following scene has them exiting the restaurant and moving to an abandoned warehouse, where, before getting into different classic cars, Cardi B and Mars are shown "playful canoodling" on the hood of Cardi B's car.[45][48][18] On the final shot the two groups are hanging out together, as Cardi B and Mars sing to each other on their respective cars while driving through a tunnel.[11][45]

Reception

Matt Miller from Esquire said the video was an homage to the artists Latin "heritage and late nights in the '90s." Miller concluded they "have struck gold in the '90s".[50] NPR's, Joshua Bote opined they "bask in the early '90s glow of the time when Jodeci, low-riders and pencil 'staches reigned supreme. It's Saved By The Bell with a dash of Chicano-charmed spice."[52] Sesali Bowen of Nylon praised the video, saying "the visuals are colorful and playful, but still very sexy".[16] Vibe's J'na Jefferson dubbed the music video as "sexy", finding that "Cardi B and Bruno Mars get up close and personal".[11] Dave Quinn writing for People said "it's an electrifying video, with Cardi and Mars' chemistry off the charts".[48] Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly compared the music video of "Please Me" to "Finesse" due to its "colorful and action-packed" set.[53] Idolator's Mike Nied considered the video a vibrant and lively affair.[45] Tara Martinez from Elite Daily called the video "unapologetically sexy". She dubbed it, "the sexiest video I've seen in a long time."[19]

Lake Schatz, Evan Minsker and Elizabeth Aubrey from Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork and NME, respectively, found the video to be "stylish".[54][55][56] Ron Diker writing for HuffPost affirmed that "things get spicy in a hurry" in the music video. Dike added that the lyrics, along with the "twerking and suggestive moves" in the video are anything but subtle.[57] Elyse Dupre from E! Online dubbed the video as "steamy".[58] Colin Joyce of Vice said the music video highlights the attributes of the song. Joyce felt it was "like watching two theater kids dance up on each other. It's maybe just a little too sincere in its horniness."[18] In 2019, the music video received a nomination for Best Pop Video at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards and Video of the Year at the BET Awards 2019.[59][21]
