Prunus subg. Prunus

Prunus subg. Prunus is a subgenus of Prunus. This subgenus include species of plum, apricot and bush cherry. As some species conventionally included in Prunus subg. Amygdalus are clustered with plum/apricot species according to molecular phylogenetic studies,[1] subg. Amygdalus has been incorporated into subg. Prunus.[2] Therefore, this subgenus also include species related to almond and peach.

Sect. Amygdalus

Most Old World almond species belong to this section, except P. mongolica, P. tangutica, P. triloba, P. pedunculata, P. tenella, P. petunnikowii and related species.[1]

Sect. Armeniaca

Species in this section are true apricots, all native to Asia. The European species P. brigantina is not a true apricot.[2]

Sect. Emplectocladus

This section includes six New World species.[3][4]

Sect. Louiseania

This section includes two Northeast Asian species. Although they are called flowering almond, they are more closely related to apricots.[1]

Sect. Microcerasus

Species in this section are known as bush cherries or dwarf cherries.[2]

Sect. Penarmeniaca

This section includes two New World species.[3][5]

Sect. Persicae

This section includes peach species as well as two species previously considered almonds (P. mongolica and P. tangutica).[1]

Sect. Prunocerasus

This section includes New World plums and peachbush (P. texana).[1][2]

Sect. Prunus

This section includes Old World plums, including P. brigantina.[2]

Species with uncertain taxonomic positions

Sect. Chamaeamygdalus used to be included in Amygdalus. However, molecular phylogenetic research indicates that it is polyphyletic and should be excluded from Amygdalus.[1]
