Real Groove (song)

"Real Groove" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue from her fifteenth studio album Disco (2020). Minogue announced the song as the third official single from the album on 5 December 2020 by Darenote and BMG, during her appearance on Graham Norton's Saturday Morning Show on BBC Radio 2.[1][2] Minogue co-wrote the song with Alida Garpestad, as well as its producers Teemu Brunila and Nico Stadi. "Real Groove" is a disco-pop song that features a funk bass, strings and a vocoder effect. Lyrically, it speaks about Minogue comparing an ex-lover's new love interest with their previous relationship.

On 31 December 2020, a remixed version of "Real Groove" with English singer Dua Lipa, subtitled Studio 2054 Remix, was released onto digital platforms.[3][4] The remix featured updated production, handled by Lipa's musical director William Bowerman, as well as an extended instrumental section in the middle of the song.[5]

Background and release

"Real Groove" was co-written by Kylie Minogue, Alida Garpestad and its producers Teemu Brunila and Nico Stadi. The song was recorded in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. The song keeps cohesion with the disco aesthetic of the album, but was noted to incorporate elements of R&B music, employing the use of a "funk bass".[6][7]

Minogue commented on the recording process of "Real Groove":

“Because I was recording my own vocals at home, I found myself doing a lot more takes than I usually would, to the point where I literally had to back away from my laptop. ‘Real Groove’ was one of the songs where I did the most takes. I wanted to take the melody down half a tone. We experimented with doing it lower, but ultimately the higher notes were the sweet spot. You don’t know what’s coming, and then the song ends up really pumping. It was worth the effort.”

Kylie Minogue in an interview with Apple Music[8]

"Real Groove" was announced as the album's third official single on 5 December, when Minogue appeared on Graham Norton's Saturday Morning Show on BBC Radio 2.[1][2] Following Minogue's appearance at Dua Lipa's Studio 2054 live stream,[9] Minogue teamed up with Lipa on "super special remix" of the song,[10] which featured additional vocals by the latter during the chorus, as well as new production for the song.[4]

Commercial performance

Despite not being a single at the time, "Real Groove" entered and peaked at number twenty-six on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.[11] After one day of tracking, the Studio 2054 remix entered the UK Singles Downloads Chart at number twenty-five.[12] The remix entered the UK Singles Chart at number 95 making it Minogue's 61st and Lipa's 19th entry in the Top 100. [13]

Live performances

"Real Groove" was first performed by Minogue during her Infinite Disco live stream, which took place on 7 November 2020; the live stream focused largely on songs from Disco, and also included songs from the rest of the singer's career. The performance of "Real Groove" incorporated LED flooring and lasers.[14][15] Minogue joined English singer Dua Lipa during her Studio 2054 live stream on 27 November 2020; the live stream was in support of Lipa's second studio album Future Nostalgia (2020), where Minogue appeared as one of eight special guests; the pair performed a snippet of "Real Groove" as part of a medley, along with Lipa's songs "One Kiss" and "Electricity".[9][16] On 5 December, Minogue appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show, during which she gave an interview, and closed the show with a performance of "Real Groove".[17][18]
