Taghavard

Taghavard (Armenian: Թաղավարդ) or Taghaverd (Azerbaijani: Tağaverd) is a village in Nagorno-Karabakh. The village naturally consists of an upper and lower part, with the upper part being called Zardarashen and the lower part Kaler. Following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, control of the village has been divided along these lines, with Azerbaijan controlling the upper part of the village as part of its Khojavend District and Armenians de facto controlling the lower part of the village as part of the Martuni Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh by the name of Taghavard Kaler (Armenian: Թաղավարդ Կալեր).[2]

History

The village had an ethnic Armenian-majority population in 1989, prior to the First Nagorno-Karabakh war.[3]

The village was captured by Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War and subsequently made part of the Martuni Province of the Republic of Artsakh.

Azerbaijan recaptured the upper part of the village during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.[2]
