William S. Hart High School

William S. Hart High School is a four-year public high school in Newhall, Santa Clarita, California, United States. It is the oldest high school in the Santa Clarita Valley. The school has been educating students through the 12th grade since 1945. Hart was named for local cowboy actor William S. Hart and is part of the William S. Hart Union High School District.

Student demographics

As of the 2019–20 academic year, 2,243 students were enrolled at Hart High School. 53.2% of students were Hispanic, 35.9% were non-Hispanic white, 5.8% were Asian American, and 1.7% were African American.[2]

As of the 2014–15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,326 students and 82.4 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 28.2:1. There were 491 students (21.1% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 86 (3.7% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]

Activities

Hart High School was formerly the host of the Hart Invitational Quiz Bowl, a quiz bowl competition for teams from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Lori Huenink coached the quiz bowl team for 21 years from 1974 to 1995.[3]

Mascot controversy

Hart High School's mascot has been an Indian since the school's foundation in 1945. In June 2020, students urged principal Jason d'Autremont to discontinue the mascot, which they characterized as outdated and offensive. An online petition to change the mascot gathered thousands of signatures.[4] D'Autremont replied that it wasn't his primary focus.[5]

Film composer Paul Hertzog formerly worked at Hart as the AP Music Theory teacher.[10] Hertzog also taught 10th-grade Honors English.
