Derby is a civil parish in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada.[2]

For governance purposes it is divided between the local service districts of Renous-Quarryville and the parish of Derby,[3] both of which are members of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission (GMRSC).[4]

Origin of name

The parish was named in honour of the Earl of Derby,[5] Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time of its erecton. William F. Ganong further notes that local legend states the parish took its name from horse races held in the area.[5]

History

Derby was erected in 1859 from Nelson Parish.[6]

Delineation

Derby Parish is defined in the Territorial Division Act[2] as being bounded:

West by Blackville Parish, north by Southesk Parish and the Northwest Miramichi River east by the lower extremity of Beaubears Island and to include the same, and south by the southwest branch of the Miramichi River.
