France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005

France was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 by Ortal with the song "Chacun pense à soi". The song was written and composed by Saad Tabainet.

Ortal, born in Israel of Berber and Andalusian origins, began singing when she is sixteen. In 2000, Ortal moved to Spain and joined the group ‘Gipsy Sound’ (Alabina) with whom she toured Europe with for two years. Ortal provided entertainment at MGM’s hotel in Las Vegas, the French première of the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies in Paris, and on television in Monaco for Prince Albert’s birthday party. Ortal has performed in Tunisia and has also provided backing vocals on the albums of various French artists.

Un candidat pour l’Eurovision

Un candidat pour l’Eurovision was the national final organised by France 3 to select France's entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. The competition was hosted by Laurent Ruquier and Elsa Fayer and produced at the La Plaine St-Denis TV Studios in Paris.

Competing entries

After requesting proposals from record companies on September 2003, France 3 received 13 submissions. 5 entries were selected to compete in the national final.[1] France 3 presented the selected acts on 17 February 2005 and their entries were released on 11 March 2005. On 14 March 2005, an introductory documentary showed the entries selection and ended with a presentation of the five participating acts.[2]

Final

The final aired live on 15 March 2005. In addition to their contest entry, each participating artist performed a duet with a well-known act. The winner was determined by public televoting (50%) and a five-member jury panel (50%).[3] The jury panel consisted of Jean-Claude Camus (producer), Dominique Segall (journalist), Miroslava Brimont (vocal coach), Bertrand Mosca (director of France 2) and Jean-Michel Boris (former director of L'Olympia).[1]
