France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011

France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany, selecting their entry through an internal selection, organised by the French broadcaster France 3.[1][2]

Before Eurovision

Internal selection

France 3 announced on 6 January 2011 that the French entry for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest would be selected internally despite previous rumours of a national final.[3][4] On 4 February 2011, France 3 announced that the French entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 would be Amaury Vassili.[5] His song "Sognu" was written by Daniel Moyne, Quentin Bachelet and Jean-Pierre Marcellesi and contains lyrics in Corsican.[6] The entry was presented to the public on 7 March 2011 during the France 3 programme Chabada.[7]

At Eurovision

France automatically qualified for the final on 14 May 2011, as part of the "Big Five". Amaury Vassili performed 11th on the night, and obtained 15th place with 82 points, despite being a bookmarker's favourite for winning along with Azerbaijan, United Kingdom and Ireland. Belgium and Greece awarded their maximum 12 points to France in the Final.
