France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013

France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The French entry was selected through an internal selection, organised by the French broadcaster France Télévisions. Amandine Bourgeois represented France with the song "L'enfer et moi", which placed 23rd and scored 14 points in the final.[1][2]

Before Eurovision

Internal selection

On 22 January 2013, France 3 announced that the French entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 would be "L'enfer et moi" performed by Amandine Bourgeois, written by Boris Bergman and David Salkin.[1] 18 entries were shortlisted after France 3 requested proposals from record companies and a fourteen-member selection committee reviewed the shortlist and selected the entry over two rounds: the first to select five finalists after a blind listening and the second to select the winner. The selection committee consisted of Yvan Cassar (arranger and conductor), Élodie Hesme (lyricist), Jacques Veneruso (composer and author), Gérard Pont (Francofolies director), Bertrand Habart (Deezer editorial director), Virginie Borgeaud (manager), Bruno Berberes (casting and artistic director), Claude Bosle (Télé 7 Jours editor-in-chief), Audrey Chauveau (France Ô representative), Thierry Langlois (France 3 Programmes Director), Julien Borde (France 3 General Programmes Secretary), Yann Chapellon (France Télévisions President and General Director of Distribution), Marie-Claire Mezerette (France 3 Director of Games and Entertaintainment) and Frédéric Valencak (Head of Delegation for France at the Eurovision Song Contest).[3]

"L'enfer et moi" was released on 13 March 2013 through Spotify. The entry was formally presented to the public on 14 March 2013 during the France 5 programme C à vous and on 24 March 2013 during the France 3 programme Chabada.[4]

As a member of the "Big Five", France automatically qualified for a place in the final, held on 18 May 2013. In addition to their participation in the final, France was assigned to vote in the second semi-final on 16 May 2013.[5]

During the French delegation's press conference on 15 May, France was allocated to perform in the first half of the final.[6] In the final, the producers of the show decided that France would open the show and perform 1st, preceding Lithuania.[7] France scored 14 points in the final and placed 23rd, the third-lowest placement ever for France.[2]
