It was released in the United Kingdom by Virgin Records as a British equivalent to the American compilation Greatest Hits. Virgin omitted "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" and "Here to Go (Go Mix)" from the American running order and added the singles "Mongoloid," "Be Stiff," "Secret Agent Man" and "The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize," as well as an exclusive remix of "Whip It."
Originally released on CD and cassette formats in 1993, a double-LP edition by Simply Vinyl was later released in 2001.

Steve Huey reviewing for Allmusic called Hot Potatoes the best available single-disc overview of Devo's career, hitting nearly all of the most significant moments from their first five albums,[1] and superior to the American Greatest Hits, which for some reason does not feature "Mongoloid", one of the most obvious choices for a Devo hits collection.[1]
