List of animated series with LGBTQ characters: 2020–present

The 2020s saw a blossoming of LGBTQ characters in animated series, whether in all-ages animation, adult animation, young adult animation, or in anime. For example, the three seasons of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts aired on Netflix, featured a prominent gay relationship, and the first season of The Owl House included two LGBTQ protagonists, one who is bisexual and the other who is lesbian.[1][2][3] In 2020 alone, Cleopatra in Space featured lesbian characters,[4] Magical Girl Friendship Squad had a lesbian protagonist[5] and Helluva Boss had three LGBTQ characters, two of which were bisexual[6][7] and one which was pansexual.[8] The same year, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Steven Universe Future, renowned for their LGBTQ representation, came to an end.[9][10] In anime, LGBTQ characters appeared in various productions. Lesbian characters were protagonists in Asteroid in Love,[11] If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die,[12] Adachi and Shimamura,[13] Assault Lily Bouquet,[14] and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom![13] while Interspecies Reviewers had a intersex character[15] and Seton Academy: Join the Pack! had a genderfluid character.[16]

Interspecies Reviewers January 11, 2020 Crimvael Intersex / Bisexual A well-endowed intersex angel with a broken halo that has male and female genitalia, as noted throughout the series.[15] Despite his feminine appearance, he chooses to identify as male upon meeting Stunk and Zel in episode 1, to avoid them trying anything perverted on him. He is hinted to be bisexual in episode 3 and in episode 9, the narrator uses the pronoun "they" to refer to Crim.

This is expanded in season 2, as in the episode "Paw of the Jaguar," Troy kisses Benson on the cheek, and in a later episode, "Heroes on Fire," a song about falling in love plays as they lock eyes, indicating he clearly has a crush on Troy. In season 3, Benson often referred to Troy as his boyfriend, and the two were seen still together in the end of "Age of Wonderbeasts". The series creator Radford "Rad" Sechrist hinted at Troy being pansexual, but it was never completely confirmed.[32] United States
June 12, 2020 Asher Non-binary When asked by a fan about the gender of Asher, series creator Radford "Rad" Sechrist said that Asher is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns,[33] which was later confirmed by Bill Wolkoff, co-screenwriter of Kipo.[34]
Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins/Magical Girl Friendship Squad January 1, 2020 Daisy Lesbian Daisy, one of the magical girls, a pale-skinned "badass" superhero who works with her female medium-brown-skinned roommate, Alex,[35] in the pilot show, Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins, is a lesbian. She sleeps with a black woman in episode 2, "Superparty," who leaves after she sees Alex throwing up in a sink because she is drunk. In the main show, Magical Girl Friendship Squad, Daisy is unambiguously queer as she has slept with "every barista" at the local coffee shop.[5] In the second episode of the main show, "The Cool S," a sticker with the transgender pride flag is shown on Daisy's laptop. In the fourth episode, "Anti-Fungal Spit Skanks," Daisy's ex-girlfriend and classic-style anime character, Yolanda,[36][37] is shown to be working at an urgent care center in the city. On November 1, 2020, Hallie Cantor, a writer for the show, stated that they hadn't yet identified Daisy "as trans or cis,"[38] meaning that she could be a cisgender or trans lesbian. Additionally, in the episode "The Real World," Pansy, who calls herself Daisy's "monogamous live-in girlfriend" is introduced, but she only exists in the dimension created by Nut's sister, Gloriana. On December 4, 2020, Krystal Downs, a director on the show, confirmed that Daisy is lesbian in a tweet.[39]
Seton Academy: Join the Pack! February 18, 2020 Iena Madaraba Genderfluid / Intersex Iena Madaraba, also known as Yena, is a spotted hyena with male genitalia and is confused about her true gender and sexuality. Although she later finds out that she is biologically female, she still allows others to refer to her with either gender pronoun in episodes such as in "The Wild Habits of a Troubled Animal."[16] Japan

This episode is a spin-off of the original Adventure Time series where Marcy was shown as a bisexual woman[49] who once dated a male wizard named Ash,[50] with her voice actor, Olivia Olson confirming that Marceline and Bonnie had dated.[51] In the series finale of that series, Bonnie and Marcy shared on-screen kiss,[52] confirming their relationship. Bonnie's sexuality, despite the fact she dated a male character named Mr. Cream Puff,[53] has not been confirmed, with reviewers arguing that she is either bisexual,[54] non-binary,[55] queer,[55] lesbian,[56] or a combination of some of the latter, as both live in a world where "sexuality is somewhat fluid."[57]

Moxxie Bisexual A demon and protagonist who is an assassin and weapons expert of I.M.P. In September 2020, on Bi Visibility Day, series creator Vivienne Medrano revealed he is bisexual on her Twitter account.[6]
Stolas A prince of Hell, he is in a complicated relationship with Blitzo. He is married and has a daughter Octavia who he acts as a "dorky dad" around putting her happiness ahead of everything else as shown in the Pilot, where it is noted that he has phone sex with Blitzo.[lower-alpha 6] In the episode "Murder Family", he asks Blitzo to, every month, give him the spell book which allows I.M.P. to travel to the human realm. He also asks Blitzo to fornicate with him, the latter who reluctantly agrees while running for his life. As such, a past relationship between Blitzo and Stolas is implied.[7]
Loona Blitzo's "adopted daughter". In the third episode, she acts as a honey pot as she flirts with both men and women as she is seemingly interested in Verosika, Blitzo's ex-girlfriend, and appears to have a crush on a male Hellhound, who works for Verosika, named Vortex.[62]
Japan Sinks 2020 July 9, 2020 Kite Trans man Kite is an 18-year old famous YouTuber with 430 million subscribers. He adventures in unexplored and dangerous areas around the world, and uploads aerial footage from his paramotors. In a flashback to when he was a child, he had long hair and is shown to have been assigned female at birth, due to being shown wearing a skirt which he removes to reveal a pair of shorts underneath. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! April 11, 2020 Mary Hunt She develops romantic feelings toward the series protagonist, Catarina, differing from the script of the otome game, Fortune Lover, beginning in episode 2 of the series, "A Prince Challenged Me To a Fight..." In episode 9, "Things Got Crazy at a Slumber Party...," Anne Shelley, Catarina's maid, observes that Mary loves Catarina so much that she concocted a "terrifying plan" of sorts to get them to stay together.[64] In the same episode, Mary, in a sleepover with Catarina, Sophia, and Maria, admits she likes Catarina, saying she and someone she loved would trade dresses.
April 18, 2020 Sophia Ascart In episode 8, when inside the book world, Sophia pins Catarina against a wall, confesses her love, and proposes they move in together.[65] Although Catarina does not understand the ramifications of this confession, Maria and Mary, who also have crushes on Sophia, recognize it full well. In episode 9, "Things Got Crazy at a Slumber Party..." Anne Shelley observes that Sophia tries to get Catarina to realize that she has feelings for her, but to no avail.
April 25, 2020 Maria Campbell When Catarina saves Maria from bullies, in the episode "I Enrolled in the Magic Academy...," she steals a romantic event from Gordo, causing Maria to begin falling love with Catarina in episode 4 of the series. In the following episode, Catarina steals a major romantic scene from Keith unintentionally, and they grow closer together. In a later episode, "Things Got Crazy at a Slumber Party...," Anne Shelley says that Maria shows her love for Catarina by sharing her sweets with her. In the episode "The Moment of My Doom Arrived... Part 1," Maria defends Catarina from false charges and says that Catarina means a lot to her. In the show's season 1 finale, Catarina asks her who she likes, and she says "the only one I love, admire, and want to be with for all time is you, Lady Catarina. So please allow me to stay by your side from now on."[66]
My Pride: The Series February 16, 2020 Nothing This series follows a "queer, disabled lioness" named Nothing who is trying to heal the world.[67] The series creator, Madeleine Patton, stated that it is important to tell diverse stories, and notes that the story deals with "ableism, queerness, feminism, womanhood and also, of course, lions."[68] The mate of Nothing is Hover, formerly named Longrun, as indicated in episode 7, "Hover," in September 2020. Star Trek: Lower Decks August 6, 2020 Beckett Mariner Bisexual She is a human ensign aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos and the daughter of Captain Freeman who is irreverent and a rule-breaker on the surface, but is actually very good at Starfleet but cares so little she has been demoted many times, with her voice actor Tawny Newsome saying that Mariner "just wants to ride her skateboard and eat her piece of pizza in peace, man."[69] In early October 2020, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Mike McMahan confirmed that Capt. Amina Ramsey was Beckett Mariner's former lover at Starfleet Academy, even though it wasn't explicit, saying that "every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual" in a sense, and that they did not "intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis."[70] However, he promised to do better in the show's second season, saying they would dig into it more, saying that the show could, in the future, more explicitly state "things that the writers always knew about Mariner." The Owl House January 24, 2020 Amity Blight Lesbian Initially serving as a rival to protagonist Luz Noceda, she warms up to her due to the latter's kind nature.[1] Amity is a top student at Hexside Academy, the same school Luz is attending, and is shown blushing or becoming bashful on multiple occasions whenever Luz displays any affectionate behavior towards her, suggesting that she might have a crush on Luz. Her implied sapphism is confirmed in the episode "Enchanting Grom Fright", where it is revealed that her biggest fear is getting rejected by someone who she planned to ask to the prom, and that person is revealed to be Luz. Animation supervisor Spencer Wan described Luz and Amity's dance in the same episode as "the gay thing",[72] while series creator Dana Terrace noted that "queer kids" were in the main cast[73] and that there was a bisexual character in the show,[74] without specifying which character she was referring to in her tweet. Additionally, Gravity Falls creator and The Owl House star Alex Hirsch stated that the show contained "explicitly queer" characters.[75] On September 2, during a Reddit AMA, Terrace confirmed that Amity is intended to be a lesbian.[2] In the same AMA, Terrace stated that Luz was Amity's first crush.[3] United States
January 10, 2020 Luz Noceda Bisexual Luz Noceda, the main character of The Owl House has shown explicit interest in men and women. As shown in the second episode, "Witches Before Wizards" where Luz meets a character named Nevareth who she reacts to in a way similar to that of a small crush or infatuation. In the episode "Lost In Language", she is shown to be blushing at both Edric and Emira Blight. A few episodes later in "Adventures in the Elements", she states the words, "I've got a new crush and her name is education". Dana Terrace, the show creator also tweeted about how she wanted to make a bisexual character.[74] On September 2, during a Reddit AMA, Terrace confirmed that Luz is bisexual.[2] She also stated that Luz is "oblivious to some things in front of her," including Amity's crush on her.[76] That makes her the first bisexual lead character on a Disney Channel show.[77]

Twittering Birds Never Fly February 15, 2020 Yashiro Yashiro, a masochist and yakuza boss warms up to his new bodyguard, Chikara Doumeki. As his entreaties fail, he discovers why his bodyguard only wants to stay at "arm's length" to himself, rather than get involved in a relationship.[79] An anime film with these characters was released on February 15, 2020 titled Twittering Birds Never Fly – The Clouds Gather while an OAD will be released on March 1, 2021 titled Twittering Birds Never Fly – Don't Stay Gold, along with two upcoming films, one of which is titled Twittering Birds Never Fly – The Storm Breaks.[80]

2021 DeadEndia TBA Barney Trans man In an interview on August 17, 2020, series creator Hamish Steele explained how the show changed from its original iteration on Cartoon Hangover in 2014, and the graphic novels that followed it,[86] stating that he is grateful for showrunners who fought for LGBTQ characters in their shows, adding that there was "absolutely no pushback from Netflix about representation," while describing Barney as a trans male character.[87] He also hoped that the show will help out "more trans creators getting their chance to tell their stories" while hinting at other LGBTQ characters in the show apart from Barney.
