As a member of FIFA and UEFA, the Montenegro national football team has been playing official matches since March 2007. Montenegro is playing in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship. Except that, the team is playing friendly matches.

The Azerbaijan v Montenegro match, originally scheduled to be played at Olympic Stadium, Baku, was moved to a neutral venue, as UEFA announced on 20 October 2020 to temporarily suspend all UEFA matches taking place in Armenia and Azerbaijan until further notice due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.[5]
