Sabah Heritage Party

Sabah Heritage Party (Malay: Parti Warisan Sabah or WARISAN) is a Sabah-based opposition political party of Malaysia which is aligned with the Pakatan Harapan opposition coalition. [3] The party was formed on 17 October 2016, founded and led by Shafie Apdal.[4] The party was formerly named as Sabah Heritage Development Party.[5] Prior to the 2018 general election, the party has agreed to align with the PH opposition coalition.

History

The party has secured an electoral pact with PH in the 2018 general election, its President Shafie Apdal also promised that the party would be represented and became part of the federal cabinet if the PH coalition came to power, [1][6] adding that through the electoral pact they will "only work together, not joining the PH pact as their party will only contest in Sabah".[7] The party became part of the ruling bloc and federal government when PH won the 2018 general election. In the 2020 Sabah state election, the state ruling party was defeated by the informal Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state opposition coalition that comprises federal ruling Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional and United Sabah Party by failing to secure a simple majority to retain the state power, instead, the informal GRS was elected as the new state government after managing to do so. After the victory of GRS in the 2020 state election, the informal coalition had been invited by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah Juhar Mahiruddin to form the new state government. Following this, the party became the largest opposition party of the State Legislative Assembly and the Chief Minister before state election and its President Shafie became the new state Leader of the Opposition after being ousted in the state election. On 12 December 2020, Shafie announced reposition of the party as a national party instead of state party with a call towards national unity as the way forward and approval of the spread of its wings to Peninsular Malaysia as the party wants East Malaysia to join and become part of the decision-making consideration for the nation. Following this announcement, the party is set to be renamed as the Malaysian Heritage Party (Parti Warisan Malaysia).
