Van Basten's goal, in which he volleyed right-footed over Rinat Dasayev from the tightest of angles on the right of the penalty area from Arnold Muhren's looping ball from the left, would later be described as one of the greatest goals in the history of the European Championships.[5][6][7][8]
Despite appearing in the FIFA World Cup Finals of 1974 and 1978, this was the first international tournament won by the Netherlands, and the only time the Netherlands have ever reached the final of UEFA Euro. For Russia, this is still the country's latest attempt to win the second European trophy, and the latest time they reached the final of the competition.
