Nationals of Uganda
Jus soli
- If you're born in Uganda and your parents or grandparents belong to an indigenous tribe to Uganda as of February 1926, you're automatically a citizen of Uganda.
- If you're born outside of Uganda, but your parents or grandparents were a citizen by birth
- A foundling under 5 whose parents are not known is automatically a citizen of Uganda
- Adoptees of Ugandans under the age of 18 years of age
- Anyone whose application is accepted and duly registered as a citizen of Uganda, is a citizen of Uganda[1]
Multiple citizenships
Under the law of Uganda, one may be a dual national of Uganda, (that is a national of Uganda and a national of one other country), however citizenships of any more is prohibited under law, and any third nationality must be renounced. Dual nationals are restricted from holding the offices:
- President of Uganda
- Vice President
- Prime Minister
- Cabinet Minister and other Ministers
- Inspector General and the Deputy Inspector General of Government
- Technical Head of the armed forces
- Technical heads of Branches of the armed forces
- Commanding Officers of armed forces units of at least battalion strength
- Officers responsible for heading departments responsible for records, personnel and logistics in all branches of the armed forces
- Inspector General of Police and Deputy Inspector General of Police
- Heads and Deputy Heads of National Security and Intelligence Organizations, (ESO, ISO & CMI)[1]
Commonwealth citizenship
Ugandans are also Commonwealth citizens as well.
