Plot

The dominant matriarch of the Modi Household Kokila Modi decides to visit her long-lost brother, Praful Desai who resides in Surat. The Desais comprise of Praful and his wife Jamuna, his wicked sons, Pankaj, Chetan except for Anant, his daughters Hiral and Tia, his daughters-in-law, Kanak and Hema, and his grandchildren, Piyush and Saachi. Also, a part of the household is maid Gehna, who was taken in by the family after her father sacrificed himself while saving Praful's life. Even though Praful and Jamuna treat Gehna as their daughter, the rest of the Desais consider her a nuisance and a useless servant.

Five years ago, (In Saath Nibhaana Saathiya), Kokila lost her beloved son Ahem. Soon, it is revealed that Ahem survived the accident and that he has lost his memory. Gehna and Anant along with Kokila and Gopi help revive Ahem’s lost memory and reunite the Modis. Later, the Modis say goodbye and leave back to Rajkot. On the same night, Sagar (Hema’s brother) attempts to molest Gehna, and Anant witnesses the same and thrashes Sagar for attempting to commit this sin.

Anant figures that the only way Gehna can earn respect is to get her married into a better household. Anant along with his girlfriend, Radhika, finds a match for Gehna. Later, Gehna’s match is revealed to be a fraud, leaving Gehna alone in the marriage. To respect Gehna and to stop her from breaking down, Anant marries Gehna on the recommendation of his father Praful; thus upsetting Jamuna. Jamuna slowly starts developing a hatred for Gehna, after being influenced by Kanak. Once Anant’s girlfriend Radhika gets to know that Anant is already married, she fumes and tries to attempt suicide but is saved by Anant.

Anant and Gehna slowly start falling for each other, but Radhika wants to come in between Anant and Gehna. Meanwhile, Kanak vows to be the cause of destruction for their bond and creates misunderstandings between Jamuna and Gehna, thus causing the former to hate the latter. On the occasion of Saraswati puja, the responsibility of decorating the pandal is given to Gehna. But Kanak makes a plan and sends Sagar to burn the tent; Sagar burns the tent, but Gehna decorates the tent again and impresses Jamuna. Kanak is horrified seeing this to such an extent that she intoxicates Gehna and makes her embarrass herself and the Desais despite the latter winning the Dance competition against Kanak. While Radhika is almost thrown out after being falsely accused of being responsible for the same, Anant soon uncovers the truth of Kanak being responsible for the same, but Kanak shocks the family by playing a reverse card of declaring a partition. Kanak, Chetan, Pankaj and Hema conspire to succeed in this partition, while Anant makes a promise to Gehna to prevent the partition.

Production

Development

In July 2020, Devoleena Bhattacharjee signed the contract for the new season with the production under plans since a year before.[6][7] Admist this, the rap by Yashraj Mukhate released on 21 August 2020 went viral and the re-run of the series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya during the Coronavirus lockdown was garnering good ratings which made the makers to immediately start production of the new season of the series and released the first promo on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi Modi while the casting was not even started.[8]

Saathiya has been a talking point since its launch in 2010. Even after it ended, it remained on top of my mind and we came up with some ideas on how we could take it forward. During the lockdown, its reruns were widely watched and that made us believe this is a good time to bring it back with a new season. Its recall value is still very strong. There will be many new characters and a twist in the storyline, but it will remain a family show and be driven by relationships. We were working on a new storyline when his video came out and went viral, assuring us that we are on the right path.

Release

The first promo of the series was released on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi Modi from the former season.[10] In the next promo released on 1 October 2020, Bhattacharjee introduced Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar as the lead characters Gehna and Anant.[11]

Concept

The main plot of the series is taken from Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ke Apon Ke Por, even though some parts of the story are removed from the plot of Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2. The extension of the first season's story is shown as the sub plot in this season merged with the main story, featuring Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Mohammad Nazim, Rupal Patel, Swati Shah, Vandana Vithlani and Manish Arora from the former series.[12]

Casting

With the release of first promo, Bhattacharjee, Rupal Patel and Mohammad Nazim were confirmed reprising their roles of Gopi, Kokila and Ahem .[13][14][15] Vishal Singh confirmed being approached for reprising their role of Jigar but did not confirm his entry.[16] Rucha Hasabnis declined to reprise her role Rashi Modi in the new season.[17]

On 13 September 2020, Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar were confirmed as the main leads Gehna and Anant.[18] Soon, with the first look of the series, Vandana Vithlani, Swati Shah and Manish Arora were confirmed reprising their roles of Urmila Shah, Hetal Modi and Parag Modi .[19] Besides Jay Pathak, Akanksha Juneja, Nadia Himani, Prakash Vaghela, Aliraza Namdar and Anuradha Kanabar were cast.[20][21]

In the middle of November 2020, the entire cast of season one who reprised their roles quit the series.[22]

Reception

Critics

The Times of India reviewed, "Ahem's mysterious presence in Gopi's life, Kokila's sass and injustice towards Gehna will keep you hooked."[23]

India Today criticized the launch of the new season as unnecessary and on the other hand criticizing the former season saying, "During the course of seven years, the show took three major leaps – eight years, 10 years and four years. That is 22 years in total. Yet they've something left to tell the audience? Needless to say, how the show turned to be ridiculous on several occasions. Saath Nibhaana Saathiya tried to be progressive but the show was regressive to the core."[24]

Ratings

The premiere episode on 19 October 2020 garnered a good TRP of 2.8 while averaging 2.2 in that week with 5.67 million impressions in Hindi GEC urban occupying third position and 8.16 million impressions overall occupying fifth position in Hindi GEC.[25][26][27]
