Plot

A famous journalist Aditya from Delhi visits Imlie's village to interview Satyakam Dadda. One stormy night Imlie is forced to spend the night in the cottage with Aditya. Though both are innocent, the locals force Aditya to marry Imlie. Aditya, previously engaged to his girlfriend Malini in the city, refuses to recognise the ceremony and asks Imlie to decide what she wants to do. Imlie was devastated to know that her husband was reluctant to accept her as a wife and she was just a liability to him. Imlie at first was placed in the care of an NGO, but later circumstances forced Aditya to take her to his home.

There, Imlie introduced herself as a domestic servant who accompanied Aditya to search for a job in the city. In no time, Imlie got adjusted to the family and everyone started liking her because of her jovial and bubbly nature. Meanwhile, Aditya tries to tell Malini what all happened at Pagdandia, but he failed to do so.

The Chaturvedi's and the Tripathi's start preparation for Aditya and Malini's wedding celebration, while at the same time Imlie embarks on a new journey to find her estranged father who left her mother years ago in the village. Aditya's family insists Imlie pursue education further, after learning that Imlie is literate. Later, during wedding celebrations, Imlie is kidnapped by a child-trafficking group but was later rescued by Aditya. Aditya and Malini get engaged in a ceremony at the Chaturvedi Mansion. Imlie's constant interference in Aditya's family and the ruckus caused by her on the engagement day made Aditya take a firm decision to send Imlie back to Pagdandia.

Finally, the wedding day of Aditya and Malini arrives. Meethi and Satyakam reach Delhi to meet Imlie. Anu confronts Imlie and asks about her father and grows suspicious thereafter. Later, Imlie takes a firm stand and refuses to go back to Pagdandia. She accuses Aditya of undermining her which makes him angry. An infuriated Aditya decides to reveal the truth about Imlie to the entire family. He tries to tell the truth but fails to do so. Meethi and Satyakam reach the hotel where the wedding is going on. Imlie meets them and insults them to prevent them from learning the truth. Seeing Aditya and Malini happy together, Imlie makes a sacrifice and lets them get married.

Finally, Aditya and Malini get married. Dev and Anu bid a tearful adieu to Malini. Imlie helps Malini to complete her wedding rituals. Seeing Imlie's interest in studying, Malini offers her to take admission to her university. Aditya plans to visit Pagdandia again, to cover a media report. He asks Imlie to accompany him to Pagdandia. Imlie is heartbroken upon listening to this, as she is deeply attached to Aditya's Family.

Imlie is emotional as she leaves for Pagdandia, but the family is still unaware of the fact that Imlie won't return. On reaching Pagdandia, Aditya offers money to Imlie instead of the services rendered by her at his house as a maid. But, she refused to accept the amount as she did the work considering it as her own house. A dejected Aditya then leaves for the lodge where he'll be staying. Imlie is welcomed by her mother, Meethi and Satykam. Both Imlie and her mother share some emotional moments while villagers enquire about Aditya. Feeling guilty, villagers express their desire to seek forgiveness from Aditya for forcefully getting him married. They quickly rush to the lodge where Aditya is staying and persuade him to accompany them. Though unwilling, Aditya gives his consent and accompany them to the village. Villagers welcome him with great pomp and show and address him as "Jamai Babu" or beloved son-in-law. They get them married again, which irks Aditya. Aditya is disgusted by the odd-behavior of villagers and criticises Imlie as he feels that she is the only one responsible for this nuisance. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Rupali (Ruby) was betrayed by her husband and the latter was not faithful to her.

Aditya and Imlie are forced to do rituals together, much to Aditya's infuriation. Meanwhile, Anu tries to provoke Malini against Aditya. Dulari Devi gets suspicious about Aditya when the latter accidentally spoke Malini's name but Imlie tries to convince her. Later, the police try to trap Satyakaam. Later, Aditya is emotional as he leaves for Delhi. Soon, Imlie gets wounded as she tries to save Aditya from an intruder.

The filming of the series began in October 2020.[7] The series is based on the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh.[8]

Release

The first promo of the series was released on 27 October 2020 featuring the leads.[9]

Reception

Critical reception

ThePrint praised the series along with few other few Hindi series as revolutionary saying, "They appear to have taken a few tentative steps out of their dream bubble and hit the ground stumbling, just like Imlie did as she raced through the fields on her way to the village school, her grandmother’s admonishments hastening her strides."[10]
