Early life and education

Green was born on 19 August 1994 in Worcester, Western Cape to parents David Green and Ellirene Green.[3] Originally from Worcester, the family moved to Paarl when Green was nine years old.[4] She is of Cape Coloured origin.[5][6] Her father works as a curriculum adviser while her mother is a teacher.[7] Green attended New Orleans Secondary School in Paarl.[7]

Green studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, graduating with a medical degree in 2019.[8][9][10] In June 2015, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis while a medical student; she entered remission in December 2015.[11][12]

Pageantry

Green was initially announced as one of the 28 regional qualifiers for Miss South Africa 2018 in April 2018.[13] She later was able to advance to the televised competition as one of the top twelve competitors.[14][15] During the final competition, Green advanced into the top five and then into the top two, where she was crowned Miss Universe South Africa 2018, becoming the South African representative in Miss Universe 2018. Afterwards, she was crowned Miss South Africa 2018 with Miss World South Africa being Thulisa Keyi. She was crowned by her predecessor Adè van Heerden.[16][17][18][19][20]

As Miss South Africa 2018, Green went on to represent South Africa at Miss Universe 2018, held in Bangkok, Thailand. Green went on to place as the first runner-up, behind eventual winner Catriona Gray of the Philippines. In the top five, when asked by host Steve Harvey about her opinion on whether countries should limit the number of refugees allowed across their borders, she replied,

...I think that every country should have their own rules and regulations, but for a thriving society and for all of us to stand together, we have to understand that we are all human and that we are more alike that we are not. So, we should be open to loving each other, accepting each other. It doesn't matter where we come from...[12]

During the final word round, each delegate was asked the same question: "What is the most important lesson you've learned and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?" Green replied:[21]

Throughout my life, I've been exposed to both those who are privileged and underprivileged and what I learned is we are all human. We all want to be loved, we all want to belong, and we all want to be seen so we should treat each other that way.[12][22]

Green is the second South African to place as first runner-up in the history of South Africa's participation in the Miss Universe competition, after Leticia Snyman did so at Miss Universe 1984. Green ended her reign on 9 August 2019, after crowning Zozibini Tunzi as her successor at the Miss South Africa 2019 competition.
