Legal, Alberta

Legal /lɪˈɡæl/ is a town in central Alberta, Canada within Sturgeon County. It is located 2.4 km (1.5 mi) east of Highway 2 on Highway 651, approximately 42 km (26 mi) north of Edmonton.

Legal was established in 1894 as a Francophone community.[4] The town, the French Mural Capital of Canada, is known for its 28 murals.[5]

Demographics

In the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the town of Legal recorded a population of 1,345 living in 448 of its 465 total private dwellings, a 9.8% change from its 2011 population of 1,225. With a land area of 3.18 km2 (1.23 sq mi), it had a population density of 423.0/km2 (1,095.5/sq mi) in 2016.[3]

In the 2011 Census, the Town of Legal had a population of 1,225 living in 439 of its 464 total dwellings, a 2.8% change from its 2006 population of 1,192. With a land area of 3.22 km2 (1.24 sq mi), it had a population density of 380.4/km2 (985.3/sq mi) in 2011.[6] Of Legal's 1,215 residents, 220 (18%) considered French to be their mother tongue, compared to 2% of Albertans overall.[7]

Education

The Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No. 2 operates a francophone elementary/junior school in Legal named Citadelle School (École Citadelle), while Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools operates an English elementary/junior school.
