Lego Super Heroes

Lego Super Heroes is a theme and product range of the Lego construction toy, introduced in 2011. The line features both DC Comics and Marvel Comics plus Pixar's The Incredibles franchise. The DC Comics part of the line, despite the fact that the first video game was released in 2008, was launched first being released in late 2011. Most of this productions are based on the 1989 film Batman. The Marvel Comics part of the line was launched on April 10, 2012,[1] to be featured alongside the 2012 film The Avengers. Meanwhile, the Pixar's The Incredibles part was launched on June 15, 2018, to be featured alongside the 2018 animated film Incredibles 2.

The main focus of the line is the fictional various superheroes who have appeared in various DC Universe line and Marvel Universe line.

  • Tony Stark / Iron Man: The benefactor of the Avengers who is a self-described genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist with electromechanical suits of armor of his own invention.
  • Thor: An Avenger and the crown prince of Asgard, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name.
  • Bruce Banner / Hulk: An Avenger and genius scientist who, because of exposure to gamma radiation, transforms into a monster when enraged or agitated.
  • Steve Rogers / Captain America: The leader of the Avengers and a World War II veteran who was enhanced to the peak of human physicality by an experimental serum and frozen in suspended animation before waking up in the modern world.
  • Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow: An Avenger who formerly worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. as a highly trained spy.
  • Clint Barton / Hawkeye: An Avenger and master archer who previously worked as an agent for S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine: An officer in the U.S. Air Force and Tony Stark's close personal friend who operates the War Machine armor.

  • T'Challa / Black Panther: The prince of the African nation of Wakanda allied with Stark who gains enhanced strength by ingesting the Heart-Shaped Herb.
  • Okoye: An "extremely proud" Wakandan traditionalist from the Border Tribe who is the head of the Dora Milaje, Wakanda's all-female special forces and T'Challa's bodyguards.
  • Shuri: T'Challa's 16-year-old sister who designs new technology for the country.
  • Vision: An android and Avenger allied with Stark; created using the artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S., Ultron, and the Mind Stone.
  • Scott Lang / Ant-Man: A former petty criminal allied with Rogers; he acquired a suit that allows him to shrink or grow in scale while also increasing in strength.
  • Hope van Dyne / Wasp: The daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne who is handed down a similar suit and the Wasp mantle from her mother.

  • Pepper Potts: Potts wears a weaponized powered exosuit of armor made for her by Stark, based on the Rescue armor.
  • Harold "Happy" Hogan: The head of security for Stark Industries and former driver and bodyguard of Tony Stark who looks after Parker.
  • Dr. Stephen Strange: A former neurosurgeon who, after a car accident that led to a journey of healing, discovered the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions and became a Master of the Mystic Arts.
  • Wong: A Master of the Mystic Arts, tasked with protecting some of Kamar-Taj's most valuable relics and books.
  • Karl Mordo: A Master of the Mystic Arts, close to the Ancient One and a mentor to Strange. This version of Mordo is a combination of different characters from the Doctor Strange mythos, and unlike in the comics is not introduced as villainous.
  • Ancient One: A Celtic mystic who becomes Strange's mentor.
  • Mantis: A member of the Guardians of the Galaxy with empathic powers.
  • Nebula: An adopted daughter of Thanos who was raised with Gamora as siblings.
  • Peter Quill / Star-Lord: The half-human, half-Celestial leader of the Guardians who was abducted from Earth as a child and raised by a group of alien thieves and smugglers called the Ravagers.
  • Drax the Destroyer: A member of the Guardians and warrior in search of vengeance against Thanos for killing his family.
  • Gamora: A member of the Guardians who is an orphan from an alien world and was subsequently raised by Thanos, and is seeking redemption for her past crimes.
  • Groot: A member of the Guardians who is a tree-like humanoid.
  • Rocket: A member of the Guardians who is a genetically-engineered raccoon-based bounty hunter, mercenary, and master of weapons and battle tactics.
  • Yondu Udonta: A blue-skinned buccaneer of the Ravagers who is a fatherly figure to Quill and member of the Guardians. He is also the former deputy to Ayesha.
  • Ayesha: The golden High Priestess and the leader of the Sovereign people, a genetically engineered race who are "gold and perfect and wanting to be physically and mentally impeccable.
  • Taserface: The leader of a mutinous group of the Ravagers.
  • Carol Danvers / Vers / Captain Marvel: An ex-U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and member of an elite Kree military unit called Starforce. She was imbued with superhuman strength, energy projection, and flight after exposure to Tesseract energy.
  • Aldrich Killian: The creator of the Extremis virus and the founder and owner of the science and development organization Advanced Idea Mechanics who adopts the mantle of the Mandarin as his own. Killian develops Extremis to cure his own debilitating disability; in addition to his regenerative healing qualities, he has superhuman strength and the ability to generate extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to Extremis also grants him the ability to breathe fire.
  • Trevor Slattery: A British actor whom Killian hired to portray the Mandarin, a terrorist persona in jammed television broadcasts in which he is depicted as the leader of the international terrorist organization the Ten Rings.
  • Loki: Thor's adoptive brother and nemesis, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name.
  • Hela: Thor's older sister and the goddess of death, based on the deity Hel, who is inadvertently released from prison following Odin's death.
  • Valkyrie: A tough, hard-drinking Asgardian slave trader, based on the mythological being Brynhildr, who was once a legendary Valkyrie warrior and now works for the Grandmaster under the designation "Scrapper 142".
  • Brock Rumlow / Crossbones: Former commander of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s counter-terrorism S.T.R.I.K.E. team who was revealed to be an agent of Hydra.
  • N'Jadaka / Erik "Killmonger" Stevens: A U.S. black-ops soldier who seeks to overthrow his cousin T'Challa, with his own opinion on how Wakanda should be ruled.
  • Ulysses Klaue: A South African black-market arms dealer, smuggler and gangster, who is allied with Killmonger.
  • Ronan the Accuser: A Kree zealot and war criminal who agrees to retrieve an artifact for Thanos in exchange for the annihilation of his mortal enemies, the Xandarians. Ronan and his Sakaaran army hunt down the Guardians when they interfere with his goals.
  • Thanos: An intergalactic warlord from Titan who seeks all six Infinity Stones to destroy half of all life for the sake of "re-balanc[ing] the universe".
  • Darren Cross / Yellowjacket: A former protégé of Pym's who takes over his mentor's company and militarizes a similar version of the Ant-Man technology to create the Yellowjacket suit.
  • Ava Starr / Ghost: A woman with molecular instability, who can phase through objects; she is only considered a "villain" because her attempts at survival clash with the heroes' goals.
  • Adrian Toomes / Vulture: A salvager-turned-arms-trafficker after his company is forced out of business. He uses a suit with mechanical wings forged from Chitauri technology.
  • Herman Schultz / Shocker II: An accomplice of Toomes' who use modified, vibro-blast shooting versions of Crossbones' gauntlets.
  • Quentin Beck / Mysterio: A former Stark Industries employee and holographic-illusions specialist who masquerades as a superhero from Earth-833 in the Multiverse. He is recruited by Nick Fury to help Spider-Man stop the Elementals.
  • Yelena Belova / Black Widow: A sister-figure to Romanoff who was trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow.
  • Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian: The Russian super-soldier counterpart to Captain America and a father-figure to Romanoff and Belova.

Sets

The first wave of sets released included nine sets from the DC Universe line. The largest of the sets was "Arkham Asylum Breakout" which included 1619 pieces and eight minifigures. In addition to the first release, two polybag sets have been released under the DC Universe line, "Batman jetski" and "Batmobile" as promotions. Lego have also announced nine sets are to be released later in 2012 under the Marvel Universe line.[2]

Prior to the first wave of sets, Lego had given away five different minifigure promotional sets at comic conventions in the United States. At the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, a Green Lantern minifigure and a Batman minifigure were given away to raffle winners and at the 2011 New York Comic Con, the minifigures of Green Lantern, Batman and Superman were given away at the DC Comics booth.[3] In July 2012, 4 more exclusive figures were given at New York Comic Con to raffle winners - Shazam!, Phoenix, Bizarro and Symbiote Spider-Man. In July 2013, four more figures - Green Arrow, Black Man of Steel suit Superman, Spider-Woman and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit Spider-Man were released at NYCC.

Lego have also released an accompanying magnet set under the Super Heroes theme. It is a three piece magnet set consisting of the Batman, Robin and The Joker minifigures each attached to a magnetized brick.[4]

DC Universe

In the latter part of 2015, it was confirmed that sets based on the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released.

On 19 September 2020, it's announced that 1989 Batwing (set number: 76161) based on Batman (1989 film) will be release on 1 November 2020.[5]

Marvel Universe

The Marvel Universe sets were first released in 2012 and that year consisted of four The Avengers sets and one X-Men set released in March, followed by one Ultimate Spider-Man set in August. 2013 saw a much smaller selection available, with two Ultimate Spider-Man sets released in January followed by three Iron Man 3 sets in March. All of the 2012 and 2013 sets have now been retired by LEGO.

2014 saw two waves of sets available. These were three Ultimate Spider-Man sets and two Avengers Assemble sets released in March, followed by three Guardians of the Galaxy sets and one X-Men set in June.

2015 again sees two waves of sets, with six Avengers: Age of Ultron sets that were released in March and was followed by two Ultimate Spider-Man sets and one set based on the Ant-Man film.

In the latter part of 2015, it was confirmed that sets based on the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War will be released.

The Incredibles franchise

In 2018, the three sets based on the Incredibles 2 film would be released on 21 April 2018.[6] The three sets being released were Elastigirl's Rooftop Pursuit (set number: 10759),[7] Underminer's Bank Heist (set number: 10760)[7] and The Great Home Escape (set number: 10761).[7] In addition, Edna Mode (set number: 30615)[8][9][10][11] polybag set was released as a promotion. Each of the sets featured five core characters, named Mr. Incredible,[12] Mrs. Incredible,[12] Violet Parr,[12] Dashiell 'Dash' Parr[12] and Jack-Jack.[12]

Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite (2013)

Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite is a direct-to-video computer-animated superhero action comedy film based on the video game Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. It encompasses most cutscenes from the game, while the gameplay was replaced by new scenes. The film was released on Blu-ray and DVD on 21 May 2013, and received generally positive reviews, with praise for the animation and action, although the promotional tone of the film was criticized.[13]

Lego DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered (2014)

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Batman Be-Leaguered is an animated superhero short film based on the Lego and DC Comics brands. It premiered on Cartoon Network on October 27, 2014 and is the second Lego DC Comics film following Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite.[14] The film was released on DVD with Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League in 2015.

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League (2015)

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League is an computer-animated comedy film based on the Lego and DC Comics brands, released on February 10, 2015 on Blu-ray and DVD.[15] This is the third Lego DC Comics film following Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite and Lego DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered. Some actors from various DC properties reprise their respective roles, including Nolan North as Superman, Khary Payton as Cyborg, Diedrich Bader as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) and Tom Kenny as The Penguin and Plastic Man. The film received negative reviews from critics, with criticisms focusing on the silly and promotional tone and the characters, although the animation was praised.[16]

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom (2015)

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League – Attack of the Legion of Doom is an computer-animated comedy film based on the Lego and DC Comics brands, which was released on August 25, 2015 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.[17] This is the fourth Lego DC Comics film following Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite, Lego DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered and Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League.

Actors from various (also copyrighted) DC properties reprise their respective roles, including Mark Hamill as The Trickster, Nolan North as Superman, Khary Payton as Cyborg, John DiMaggio as The Joker, Josh Keaton as Green Lantern, Kevin Michael Richardson as Black Manta, Grey Griffin as Lois Lane and Tom Kenny as The Penguin. The film received generally positive reviews, with praise for the animation, action, and humor, although some criticized the consumerism in the film.[18]

Some actors from various DC properties reprised their respective roles, including Nolan North as Superman and Khary Payton as Cyborg.[20] The film received positive reviews, with critics deeming it superior to past films in the Lego DC Comics film series.[21]

Some actors from various DC properties reprise their respective roles, including Nolan North as Superman and Troy Baker as Batman.[23] The film received positive reviews, with praise for the action, although the consumerism was criticized.[24]

The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

The Lego Batman Movie is a 2017 computer-animated superhero comedy film produced by the Warner Animation Group and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was directed by Chris McKay in his directorial debut, and written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern, and John Whittington, and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Based on the Lego Batman toy line, the film is an international co-production of the United States, Australia, and Denmark, the first spin-off installment of The Lego Movie film series and the second installment overall. The story centers on the DC Comics character Batman as he attempts to overcome his greatest fear to stop the Joker's latest plan. The film features Will Arnett reprising his role as Batman from The Lego Movie alongside Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes.

The Lego Batman Movie had its world premiere in Dublin, Ireland on January 29, 2017,[25] and was released in the United States on February 10, 2017.[26] The film was released in 3D, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, IMAX, IMAX 3D and 4DX. The film received generally positive reviews from critics for its animation, voice acting, soundtrack, visual style, and humor, and was also commercially successful, having grossed $312 million worldwide against a budget of $80 million.

A sequel was announced in 2018. However, with Universal Pictures acquiring the rights to The Lego Movie franchise, it is unknown if it will still be produced.

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash (2018)

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash is an American direct-to-video computer-animated film. It is a superhero action-adventure comedy, based on the DC Comics and Lego brands. It is produced by DC Entertainment, The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and was released digitally on February 13, 2018 and was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 13, 2018.[27] It is the seventh Lego DC Comics film.[28] This is the first posthumous release for longtime DC producer Benjamin Melniker, who died a month before its release. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the action, humor, and animation.[29]

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman: Rage of Atlantis (2018)

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman – Rage of Atlantis is an American direct-to-video computer-animated film. It is a superhero action-adventure comedy, based on the DC Comics and Lego brands. Produced by DC Entertainment, The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con International on July 22, 2018[30] and was released digitally, DVD and Blu-ray on July 31, 2018.[31] It is the eighth Lego DC Comics film. The film received mixed reviews, with praise for the animation but criticism for the consumerism.[32]

Lego DC Batman: Family Matters (2019)

Lego DC Batman: Family Matters is an American direct-to-video computer-animated film. It is a superhero action-adventure comedy based on the DC Comics and Lego brands produced by DC Entertainment, The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation, and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, it premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2019[33] and was released on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital on August 20, 2019.[34] It is the ninth Lego DC Comics film. The DVD release includes a free 84-piece LEGO set.[35] The film received positive reviews, with praise for the humor and action, although the consumerism was criticized.[36]

Lego DC: Shazam!: Magic and Monsters (2020)

Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters is an American direct-to-video computer-animated superhero action-adventure comedy film based on the DC Comics and Lego brands produced by DC Entertainment, The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.[37] It is the tenth Lego DC Comics film. The film was released on digital on April 28, and on Blu-ray/DVD on June 16, 2020. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the humor and action.[38]

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload (2013)

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload (also known as Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload) is a computer-animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics characters that were also featured in Lego Marvel Super Heroes.[39] It premiered online in five parts on November 5, 2013. The film can also be viewed on Netflix and Amazon Video being free with Amazon Prime.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Avengers Reassembled (2015)

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Avengers Reassembled is a computer animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics characters that appeared in Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Marvel's Avengers. It is a re-imagined retelling of Avengers: Age of Ultron while using some elements from Ant-Man and Spider-Man. The film first aired on Disney XD. It is available to watch at Lego.com.[40]

Lego Marvel Super Heroes - Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thanos Threat (2017)

Lego Marvel Super Heroes - Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thanos Threat is a computer-animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics and starring the Guardians of the Galaxy.[41][42]

Lego Marvel Super Heroes - Black Panther: Trouble in Wakanda (2018)

Lego Marvel Super Heroes - Black Panther: Trouble in Wakanda is a computer-animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics and starring Black Panther.[43][44] It is a re-imagined retelling of Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.

Lego Marvel Spider-Man: Vexed by Venom (2019)

Lego Marvel Spider-Man: Vexed by Venom is a computer-animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics and starring Spider-Man.

Lego Marvel Avengers: Climate Conundrum (2020)

Lego Marvel Avengers: Climate Conundrum is a four-part computer-animated Lego film based on Marvel Comics and starring Avengers.

Video games

Lego Batman: The Videogame

A video game based on the Lego DC Super Heroes half of the line, titled Lego Batman: The Videogame was released in fall 2008. The game was released for personal computer, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2 and 3, the PSP, Wii and Xbox 360. The Mac OS X version of the game was released in April 2009 by Feral Interactive.[45]

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

A video game sequel based on the Lego DC Super Heroes half of the line, titled Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes was released in the summer of 2012 as a sequel to Lego Batman: The Video Game. The game was released on personal computer, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, Wii and Xbox 360.[46][47][48][49] The Mac OS X version of the game, published by Feral Interactive, was released on 6 September 2012.[50]

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

The third video game based on the Lego DC Super Heroes line, titled Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham was released in November 2014 as a sequel to both Lego Batman: The Video Game and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. The game was released on iOS, personal computer, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.[51]

Lego Dimensions

The crossover toys-to-life game Lego Dimensions[52][53][54][55] developed by Traveller's Tales features content based on the original The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie. A "Starter Pack" includes an additional level that recreates the events of the original film and adds Wyldstyle as a playable character. Additional "Fun packs"[56][57][58][59] add Emmet, Benny, Bad Cop and Unikitty as playable characters. A "story pack" offers an extended six-level story campaign retelling the events of the The Lego Batman Movie, and includes a playable Robin[lower-alpha 1] and Batgirl.[60] Additional "Fun packs" add Excalibur Batman[61][62] as a playable character is included as a playable character in a Fun Pack.[63]

The Lego Batman Movie Game

Based on The Lego Batman Movie, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released the endless-runner game coinciding with the release of the film. It was released for Android and iOS.

Lego DC Super-Villains

The fourth video game based on the Lego DC Super Heroes line, titled Lego DC Super-Villains was released on 30 July 2019. Unlike the Lego Batman trilogy, this is the first Lego video game to focus entirely on villains of the DC Universe, similar to the villain levels featured in Lego Batman: The Videogame.[64] The macOS version of the game was released by Feral Interactive on 30 July 2019.[65]

Lego Marvel Super Heroes

A video game based on the Lego Marvel Super Heroes line, titled Lego Marvel Super Heroes was released in October 2013. Originally, a Lego Avengers game was set to be made, but the developers felt that just being able to play as the Avengers was not enough, and thus decided to add other Marvel heroes.[66] The game was released on iOS, personal computer, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita,[67] Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One[68] and published by Feral Interactive for OS X.[69][70]

Lego Marvel's Avengers

A second standalone video game featuring the Lego Marvel Super Heroes line, separate from the first game, titled Lego Marvel's Avengers was released on January 26, 2016. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2

The third game featuring the Lego Marvel Super Heroes line, titled Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was released on November 14, 2017 as a direct sequel to the original Lego Marvel Super Heroes. However, it is not related to the standalone game Lego Marvel's Avengers.[75][76][77][78]

Lego The Incredibles

A video game adaptation based on the events of The Incredibles and Incredibles 2 films, titled Lego The Incredibles was released on June 15, 2018. Was developed by TT Fusion and released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 coinciding with the release of the second film.[79][80] A macOS version of the game was released by Feral Interactive on 21 November 2018.[81]
