Lego Monkie Kid is a Lego theme inspired by Monkey King and Journey to the West, licensed from The Lego Group.[1][2] The theme was first introduced in 2020.

Premise

The main focus of the line is Monkie Kid and his friends, battling against the Demon Bull King and his army of Bull Clones from taking over the city.[3][4][5]

Characters

  • Monkie Kid ("MK" for short):[6] He is the main protagonist in the Lego Monkie Kid series. A young noodle shop delivery boy, who was chosen by the Monkey King as a new successor and battle against the Demon Bull King. Voiced by Jack DeSena.
  • Mei:[6] The descendant of the legendary White Dragon Horse and MK's best friend. Voiced by Stephanie Sheh.
  • Mr. Tang: The regular customer of the Pigsy's Noodle shop, often tell Monkie Kid about the story of Monkey King in exchange for free noodles. Voiced by David Chen.
  • Pigsy:[6] Owner and head chef of Pigsy's Noodle shop. Voiced by Dave B. Mitchell.
  • Sandy:[6] The toughest soldier that became a "peacenik" after going to therapy due to his uncontrollable anger, yet he still helps MK and his friends on their adventures. Voiced by Patrick Seitz.
  • Mo the cat: Sandy's pet cat. Also voiced by Stephanie Sheh.
  • Monkey King:[6] The legendary king who fought the Demon Bull King centuries ago. He used his magical staff to trapped the Demon Bull King inside Flower Fruit Mountain. Voiced by Sean Schemmel[lower-alpha 1] and Dicky Cheung[7] in Mandarin version.
  • Demon Bull King ("DBK" for short):[6] Princess Iron Fan's husband and Red Son's father. He is the main antagonist of the Lego Monkie Kid series. He was defeated by Monkey King centuries ago and trapped inside Flower Fruit Mountain. Voiced by Steve Blum.
  • Red Son:[6] Demon Bull King and Princess Iron Fan's son. He is a mad scientist who build diabolical weapons and has a literal hot temper when he is humiliated in front of his father. Voiced by Kyle McCarley.
  • Princess Iron Fan:[6] Demon Bull King's wife and Red Son's mother. She wields the Magic fan that can summon whirlwinds. Voiced by Gwendoline Yeo.
  • Bull Clones: The army of mechanical bull robots, created by Red Son and led by General Ironclad. Also voiced by Steve Blum.
  • Gold and Silver Horn Demon: The twin demon brothers Jin and Yin. Also voiced by Sean Schemmel and Dave B. Mitchell.
  • Spider Queen: Who lived in the Silken Web Cave. Voiced by Kimberly Brooks.
  • Macaque: Monkey King's evil counterpart who shares his powers and wants to takeover his role. Voiced by Billy Kametz.
  • White Bone Spirit: A spiritual demon that was sealed within a tomb which was freed by the Demon Bull King, the spirit took over his body and tried to destroy MK, only for him to defeat it and free D.B.K. of its possession. Unbeknownst to them it roams the city and possessed a little girl. Also voiced by Stephanie Sheh.

Sets

In 2020, it was announced that the first wave of sets[8] inspired by Monkey King and Journey to the West would be released on 16 May 2020. The eight sets[9][10][11] being released were White Dragon Horse Bike (set number: 80006),[12] Iron Bull Tank (set number: 80007),[12] Monkie Kid's Cloud Jet (set number: 80008),[12] Pigsy's Food Truck (set number: 80009),[12] Demon Bull King (set number: 80010),[12] Red Son's Inferno Truck (set number: 80011),[12] Monkey King Warrior Mech (set number: 80012)[12] and Monkie Kid's Team Secret HQ (set number: 80013).[12] In addition, two polypag sets were released as promotions named Monkie Kid's Delivery Bike (set number: 30341)[13] and Build your own Monkey King (set number: 40474).[14] Each of the sets features five core characters, named Monkie Kid, Mei, Monkey King, Sandy and Pigsy. The sets were designed primarily for children aged 6 to 10 years old.

Later, the second wave of sets[15] would be released on 1 August 2020. The three sets[16][17][18] being released were Sandy's Speedboat (set number: 80014),[19] Monkie Kid's Cloud Roadster (set number: 80015)[19] and The Flaming Foundry (set number: 80016).[19] Monkey King (set number: 40381)[20][21][22] was also released as a sub-brand of the Lego Brickheadz theme. On 6 November 2020, it was announced that Monkie Kid's Team Dronecopter (set number: 80023)[23][24][25][26] would be released in 1 March 2021 as a third wave set.

In 2021, it's also announced that more of the third wave sets would be released on 1 March 2021. The six sets being released were Monkie Kid's Cloud Bike (set number: 80018), Red Son's Inferno Jet (set number: 80019), White Dragon Horse Jet (set number: 80020), Monkie Kid's Lion Guardian (set number: 80021), Spider Queen's Arachnoid Base (set number: 80022) and The Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain (set number: 80024).[27]

Lego Monkie Kid: A Hero Is Born (2020)

Lego Monkie Kid: A Hero Is Born is a 45 minutes television special in Lego animation, inspired by Monkey King and Journey to the West, produced by Flying Bark Productions. The special premiered on Mediacorp in Singapore on 27 June 2020.[28][29][30][31]
