Same-sex marriage in the British Antarctic Territory

Same-sex marriage in the British Antarctic Territory, which is a sector of Antarctica and is one of the 14 British Overseas Territories, has been legal since 13 October 2016. Between 2 August 2016 and 30 September 2016, a consultation on a draft of a new marriage ordinance was conducted by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The new ordinance stated that the laws relating to marriage in England would apply in the territory, thereby allowing same-sex marriage.[1][2][3] The ordinance was proclaimed by Commissioner Peter Hayes on 13 October 2016 and took effect forthwith.[4][5][6]

Performed statewide in 18 states and Mexico City, in certain municipalities in three other states, and recognized by all states in such cases.
Performed in the Netherlands proper, including the Caribbean Netherlands. Registered in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten in such cases, but the rights of marriage are not guaranteed.
Neither performed nor recognized in Niue, Tokelau or the Cook Islands.
Not recognized in Caribbean overseas territories, though marriage-equivalent ordered for the Cayman Islands.
Neither performed nor recognized in American Samoa or some tribal nations.
Cohabitation. Registered foreign marriages confer limited rights. Marriage recognized in Tel Aviv.
Degree of recognition unknown. No actual cases to date.
Limited to residency rights for foreign spouses of EU citizens.
