List of rail accidents in Bangladesh

The following is a list of some railway accidents, incidents and disasters in Bangladesh.

1947

1971

1972

  • 04/06/1972: A crowded passenger train from Khulna District collided with a standing freight train at Jessore District, when the stationmaster threw the wrong switch. 76 people died and about 500 were injured.[3][4]

1979

  • 26/01/1979: A train derailed and overturned near Chuadanga District, resulted in 70 deaths and 300 injuries.[5]

1983

  • 22/03/1983: A rail bridge collapsed with a running train in Ishwardi Upazila, Pabna District. The train was dumped onto a dry section of the river bed and one car ended up almost vertical, leaning against the bridge with one end on the ground and the other in mid-air. 60 passengers died in that accident.[6][7]

1985

  • 13/01/1985: Parbatipur-bound Simanta Express caught fire. Passengers tried to stop the train by pulling the communication cord, but the driver did not stop the train, apparently because robbers operate in the area. 27 people died and at least 58 were injured due to the accident.[8][7]

1986

1989

  • 15/01/1989: A north-bound mail train collided head-on with a Chittagong-bound express train at Gazipur District, due to the railway staff not knowing how to operate the new signal system. Several cars rolled off an embankment into a rice paddy. Due to the Bishwa Ijtema religious festival at Tongi, there were over 2,000 people in total on both trains, many riding on roofs or between coaches. At least 170 died and 400 were injured.[10][7]
  • 02/02/1989: Derailment of a passenger train near Chittagong District resulted in 13 deaths and 200 injured people.[10][7]

  • 16/04/2008: Dhaka-bound Ekota Express collided with a local bus on a level crossing on the outskirts of Kalihati, Tangail District. 17 people died and at least 30 were injured.[14]
  • 14/05/2008: Sylhet-bound Upaban express crashed into the rear of Noakhali-bound Noakhali Express at Ashuganj railway station, Brahmanbaria District. 8 people died and 100 were injured.[15]

2010

  • 08/12/2010: Two passenger trains collided head-on at Narsingdi District. The number of casualties is disputed but it is assumed that at least 10 people died and 100 people were injured.[7][16]

2011

  • 08/01/2011: At 8:30 am, a coach of Chandpur-bound Sagarika Express malfunctioned and the train stopped near Chayabani area, Chandpur District. No casualties occurred. After repair, it started its journey at 6 pm.[17]

2013

2014

  • 14/01/2014: Two coaches of local train no. 173 derailed near Chandpur railway station at around 11:45 pm. No casualties happened.[20]
  • 05/02/2014: The locomotive of Dhaka-bound Subarna Express derailed near Pahartali loco shed, Chittagong at 06:45 am due to a signaling fault. No casualties of people or damage of the train occurred. The train was rescued after two hours.[21]
  • 13/04/2014: At around 03:20 am, a running Dhaka-bound Ekota Express collided head-on with a standing Lalmonirhat-bound Lalmoni Express at Ullapara railway station, Sirajganj District. Three coaches of Ekota Express and one coach of Lalmoni Express were mangled. A total of seven coaches veered off the tracks. At least 2 people died and 50 people were injured.[22][23]
  • 09/07/2014: At 6:30 am, a freight train carrying furnace oil to a power plant from Patenga the train derailed near Faujdarhat railway station in Chittagong, and leaked around 21,255 imp gal (96,630 l; 25,526 US gal) of crude. Six wagons of the train derailed and oil from three of the wagons flowed into a nearby canal. Udayan Express from Sylhet narrowly escaped a fatal accident on the route with that train.[19]

2015

  • 12/02/2015: Chittagong-bound Meghna Express collided with a bus at 11 am at A. K. Khan rail crossing, Pahartali, Chittagong. 2 people died and 25 injured.[24]
  • 19/02/2015: Some strikers put an empty coach (no. 2024) of Meghna Express on fire by pouring petrol. Due to this, some parts of seat no. 48, 49, 50 and 51 of that coach were burnt.[25]

2016

  • 07/01/2016: Chandpur-bound Meghna Express became the victim of petrol bomb and cocktail attack at Unkila area near Chitoshi/Shahrasti, Chandpur at around 8:45 pm. No casualties happened.[26]
  • 10/01/2016: Locomotive of a Brahmanbaria-bound commuter train derailed at Arshinagar, Narsingdi District. 2 died and 10 injured as a result.[7]
  • 17/08/2016: Chittagong-bound Sagarika Express crashed with a boundary wall of Chittagong railway station. No casualties happened.[27]
  • 14/09/2016: At around 11:00 am, a container freight train with locomotive 2037 derailed in Faujdarhat, Chittagong. The loco driver and the assistant driver were injured.[28]
  • 07/10/2016: Locomotive no. 2933, which was one of the newest locomotives of class 2900, caught fire and derailed with several coaches of Parabat Express near Noapara railway station in Noyapara Upazila, Habiganj District. The driver cab and electrical cabinet of the locomotive were destroyed in the fire, and the locomotive had to undergo heavy repairs. No casualties happened.[29]

2017

  • 14/11/2017: A person died being hit by Meghna Express at around 5 am at a rail crossing beside Bangabandhu Road, Chandpur.[30]

2018

  • 09/03/2018: Five minutes before reaching Chandpur railway station, power car no. 8358 of Meghna Express caught fire due to overheating of the generator. The railway staffs were able to extinguish fire completely before the situation could go worse. Nobody died but almost 30 passengers were injured for rushing with panic to get out of the train.[31][32]
  • 15/03/2018: The connecting portion of Ga and Gha coaches of Chittagong-bound Subarna Express caught fire at about 3:30 pm in Mohakhali Amtali area near Banani railway station, Dhaka. But the reason for catching fire is not known. Later, railway workers, passengers and firefighters extinguished the fire. No casualties occurred.[33]
  • 15/04/2018: Five coaches of a train derailed at Tongi, Gazipur District. 5 died and 50 injured as a result.[7]
  • 28/11/2018: Chandpur-bound Meghna Express crashed with a local bus at Shorshodi rail gate, Feni District. 5 died and 15 injured due to this accident.[34]

2019

  • 28/05/2019: A person died being hit by Chandpur-bound Meghna Express at 9 pm at Hajiganj railway station area.[35]
  • 15/06/2019: Some passengers vandalized glasses and doors of Nangol Coat railway station as Chittagong-bound Meghna Express delayed 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the station.[36][37]
  • 23/06/2019: At around 11:40 pm, several coaches of Dhaka-bound Upaban Express veered off the tracks after a culvert over the Barochhara Canal broke down, two-hundred yards off Baramchal railway station in Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar District. Two coaches fell into the canal and one overturned. At least 5 people died and hundreds were injured.[38][39] See: Kulaura train accident.
  • 15/07/2019: At least 10 people of a microbus were killed due to a collision with a Dhaka-bound train at an unmanned level crossing in Ullapara Upazila, Sirajganj District.[40]
  • 25/08/2019: A teen died being hit by Meghna Express train at a rail crossing near the godown quarter area, Feni.[41]
  • 07/09/2019: Chattala Express avoided a fatal head-on collision with Mohanagar Express near Imambari railway station, Brahmanbaria District.[42]
  • 01/11/2019: Dinajpur-bound Ekota Express escaped from an accident from a broken railway track in Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon District.[43]
  • 12/11/2019: At around 3 am, Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita Express rammed Chittagong-bound Udayan Express at Mondobhag railway station in Kasba Upazila, Brahmanbaria District. At least 16 people died and 73 were injured. Two coaches of Udayan Express were damaged.[44][45] See: Mondobhag train collision.
  • 14/11/2019: Chattala Express was supposed to pass a rail crossing in Murapara, Comilla District. Meanwhile, a loaded truck became stuck on that crossing. The locomaster stopped the train in time, avoiding a fatal collision with the truck.[46][47]
  • 14/11/2019: At around 2 pm, a locomotive and seven coaches (including a power car) of Rangpur-bound Rangpur Express derailed at Ullapara railway station area in Sirajganj District. Fire broke out in three coaches. Nobody was killed but at least 25 passengers were injured when they hurried to get off the coaches due to the fire.[48][49]
  • 23/11/2019: The locomotive of Chattala Express caught fire at Tongi Junction railway station, Gazipur District. No fatalities occurred.[50]
  • 14/12/2019: The locomotive of Chattala Express caught fire at Lalmai railway station, Comilla District. No major fatalities occurred.[51]

2020

  • 07/01/2020: 4 people were injured due to throwing of stones on Chittagong-bound Subarna Express at 06:00 pm.[52]
  • 04/02/2020: A person died being hit by Sagarika Express at afternoon near mission road, Chandpur.[53]
  • 01/03/2020: Ac chair coach no. 6508 of Subarna Express caught fire near Laksham Junction railway station, Comilla District due to the heat caused by the friction between wheel and axle. No casualties occurred.[54][55]
  • 07/11/2020: At around 04:30 am, Dhaka-bound Nilsagar Express collided with a bus stuck on Sonakhali level crossing in Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur District. The bus got stuck with the locomotive of the train and was dragged around one or half of kilometer. 2 died and at least 5 were injured due to this accident.[56][57][58]
  • 06/12/2020: At around 11 am or 12 pm near Shahjibazar railway station of Madhabpur Upazila, Habiganj District, five wagons of a Sylhet-bound oil-carrying train from Chittagong derailed and the train fell off from the track and caught fire.[59][60]
  • 19/12/2020: At around 7 am, Rajshahi-bound Uttara Express collided with a passenger bus at Puranapoil rail crossing in Joypurhat Sadar Upazila of Joypurhat District. At least 12 died and 3 or 8 were injured due to this accident.[61][62]
