History

In March 2016, the elected MP for Bukit Batok SMC, David Ong of the People's Action Party (PAP), resigned due to an extra-marital affair with a fellow PAP member, precipitating the Bukit Batok by-election. On 7 May 2016, Murali Pillai won the seat of Bukit Batok against Singapore Democratic Party secretary-general, Chee Soon Juan by a vote count of 61.2% to 38.8%. Chee contested this constituency again at the 2020 general election but lost narrowly to Murali Pillai with a vote count of 54.80% to 45.20%.

Bukit Batok SMC with Jurong GRC & Yuhua SMC are under the same town council, Jurong–Clementi Town Council.
