History
The constituency was first formed prior to the 1988 general election and won by the People's Action Party (PAP). During the 1991 general election, the ruling PAP lost the seat to Low Thia Khiang of the Workers' Party. It was one of two opposition-held seats in Parliament alongside Potong Pasir SMC which was held by the Singapore People's Party until 2011. Low contested in Aljunied GRC during the 2011 general election and was succeeded by Yaw Shin Leong, who retained the seat defeating PAP candidate Desmond Choo.
On 15 February 2012, Yaw was expelled from the party for personal indiscretions, triggering a by-election.[1] He was succeeded by Png Eng Huat, who retained the seat with 62.1% of the vote.[2]
Hougang SMC together with the Aljunied GRC are under the same town council, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council.
Png retired prior to the 2020 general election; the WP candidate Dennis Tan Lip Fong retained the seat in that election.
