DreamWorks Channel is a pay television network owned and operated by NBCUniversal, a division of Comcast. It first launched in Southeast Asia.

DreamWorks Animation programming, both in new and archive forms, make up the primetime and early day schedules of new sister network Universal Kids, which launched in the United States on 9 September 2017 (a format evolution of an earlier version of the channel named "Sprout").[1][2] The rights for DreamWorks Animation's programming in the United States are also handled by Netflix and other networks.[3]

History

DreamWorks Animation announced on 9 December 2014 plans to launch its own TV channel starting in Asia rolling out over 19 countries in the second half of 2015. Singapore-based broadcaster HBO Asia was contracted to handle marketing, sales and technical services for the channel in Southeast Asia.[4] DreamWorks Channel launched on 1 August 2015 in Thailand. The channel represents DWA's first foray into operating its own television channel in any part of the world as a result of a joint venture through CTH.[5]

After the defunct of provider CTH in Thailand on 1 September 2016, the channel has made a deal with MONO29 since 2 July 2018 for airing DreamWorks Animation contents in a programming block.

A Middle East and North Africa channel launched on 1 August 2016 in partnership with beIN Network.[6] The channel(s) were placed under NBCUniversal

The channel was placed under the NBCU International executive vice president, lifestyle and kids Duccio Donati in August 2017. This paired the channel with E! international channels and NBCU lifestyle channel content.[7][8] On 1 January 2018, NBCUniversal International Networks took over HBO Asia's role with DreamWorks Channel in Southeast Asia.[9]

The channel launched on KPN in the Netherlands on 23 July 2019.[10]

A pop-up version was launched in Australia via pay television provider Foxtel from 1 to 30 June 2020, on channel 700.[11]

The channel launched in South Africa through African pay-television operator Startimes on 3 August 2020.[12]

Programming

The content on the channel mainly consists of series produced by DreamWorks Animation SKG and DreamWorks Classics library.[4] However, DWA's films only air in the MENA version.[3]
