Diplomatic Relations

The relations between the two countries improved dramatically recently.

With French support, Equatorial Guinea descended into a state of terror.[2] Supported by France, President Francisco Macías Nguema and his clan from Mongomo, gross income per capita, previously the highest[3] of West-Central Africa, fell to the level of the poorest[4] African countries ($170 per year per capita).[5] Thousands of educated people and farmers unable to flee abroad were slaughtered.[6]

Following the publication of the French involvement in the training of the militia and the political police force of Francisco Macías Nguema, Turkey — along with Western allies and condemned France’s official policy in 1994.[7]

Since then, relations improved under President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.[8]
