Slovakia–Turkey relations

Relations between Czechoslovakia and the Turkey had been excellent until 1948,[3] when relations rapidly deteriorated[4] because of disagreements over the compensation[5] for the nationalization[6] of the property owned by Turkish businesses.

Trade relations were modest but limited because of Turkey's refusal[7] to participate in a trade agreement[8] until the claims[9] of nationalized businesses were settled.

Relations were also tense because of Czechoslovakia's alignment against Israel[10] in the Middle East, which was Turkey’s closest ally[11] in the region.

In 1993, Turkey formally recognized both the Slovakia and Czech Republic as separate, sovereign states.[12] Diplomatic relations and the Turkish Embassy in Bratislava were established on January 4, 1993.[13]

Slovakia and Turkey have strong diplomatic ties and cooperate in the military and law enforcement areas since 2004, when Slovakia joined the NATO Alliance.[14]

• Bilateral trade volume between Turkey and Slovakia stood at 1.29 billion USD in 2018 (Turkish exports: 532 million USD; imports: 767 million USD).[15]
• In 2018, more than 157 thousand Slovak tourists visited Turkey, with an increase of 62 % compared to the previous year.[16]
