Geertje Engelsma

Geertje Engelsma (25 July 1887 – 21 July 1969) was a Dutch female kortebaanschaatsen speed skater.[1]

Both individually and in pairs she won many prizes. In pairs she was almost unbeatable together with known speed skater Lammert Dijkstra from Lemmer.[2] She also rode together with G. Castelein from Warga and Pieter Peereboom (1893–1941) from Follega.[1][3]

Personal and family

Engelsma was born in Oldeboorn as the daughter of Klaas Thaedes Engelsma (1805–1876) and Jeltje Martens Noordbeek (1803–1850). Later she moved to Nij Beets.[4] She married Harme Harmsma (1889–1984) on 2 May 1918 in Opsterland.[5]

She had four brothers and five sisters. Her sisters Akke and Wytske were also speed skaters who won several prizes. Akke rode together with known speed skater E. de Vries from Lemmer and Tj. Boersma from Oldeboorn. Wytske won prizes together with C. Dijkstra from Lemmer.[1][4]

Engelsma died in Nijbeets on 21 July 1969, aged 81.[5]
