Note
  1. Certain award groups do not simply award one winner. They recognize several different recipients, have runners-up and have third place. Since this is a specific recognition and is different from losing an award, runner-up mentions are considered wins in this award tally. For simplification and to avoid errors, each award in this list has been presumed to have had a prior nomination.

Jackson's career was rewarded with 13 Grammy Awards, as well as the Grammy Legend Award and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 6 Brit Awards, 5 Billboard Music Awards and 24 American Music Awards. He currently holds 16 Guinness World Records. He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming one of only a few artists to be inducted twice (he was inducted in 1997 as a member of The Jackson 5 and again as a solo artist in 2001). Jackson was also inducted into the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame, making him the first and currently, only recording artist to be inducted.[4] He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.[5] Jackson was also inducted in 2014 into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame along with his father Joe Jackson.[6]

A winner of countless awards for his humanitarian efforts, Jackson has been honored by two Presidents of the United States. He has two Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 1983 and 1990.[7]

MTV Video Music Awards

An MTV Video Music Award is (commonly abbreviated as a VMA) is an award presented by the cable channel MTV to honor the best in the music video medium. Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony has often been called the "Super Bowl for youth", an acknowledgment of the VMA ceremony's ability to draw millions of youth from teens to 20-somethings each year.[72] By 2001, the VMA had become a coveted award.[73] The statue given to winners is an astronaut on the moon, one of the earliest representations of MTV, and was colloquially called a "moonman". However, in 2017 Chris McCarthy, the President of MTV, stated that the statue would be called a "Moon Person" from then on.[74] The statue was conceived by Manhattan Design—also designers of the original MTV logo—based on the 1981 "Top of the Hour" animation created by Fred Seibert, produced by Alan Goodman, and produced by Buzz Potamkin at Buzzco Associates. The statue is now made by New York firm, Society Awards.[75] Since the 2006 ceremony, viewers are able to vote for their favorite videos in all general categories by visiting MTV's website.[76]

As an individual artist, Jackson was nominated for eighteen awards, winning four competitive awards. In addition, his video for "Leave Me Alone" was nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards at the 1989 ceremony, winning Best Special Effects for Jim Blashfield. In 1985, the song "We Are the World" won the Video Music Awards for Best Group Video and Viewers Choice Award and also received a nomination for Video of the Year, but these don't count towards Jackson's total. In addition, the music video to Michael and sister Janet's "Scream", won three VMAs, including Best Dance Video, while other awards such as Best Choreography and Best Art Direction went to other individuals other than the Jacksons, receiving a total of eleven nominations. His videos for "Black or White", "In the Closet" and "Jam" all received nominations for Best Special Effects in a Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography, which others besides Jackson received. In all, Jackson's videos were nominated a combined 32 times.

Jackson received the Video Vanguard Award in 1988. It was later renamed the "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" in 1991.[77]

Presidential honors

Jackson at the White House with President Ronald Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan, 1984

In 1984, Jackson was approached to donate "Beat It" as backing music for a commercial on drunk driving.[85] Jackson agreed and it was arranged for the singer to be awarded with an honor from the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.[85] Prior to collecting the award, President Reagan sent Jackson a telegram, which read:[18]

Your deep faith in God and adherence to traditional values are an inspiration to all of us. You've gained quite a number of fans along the road since "I Want You Back" and Nancy and I are among them. Keep up the good work, Michael. We're very happy for you.

The presentation took place on May 14, 1984, at the White House.[85] Upon reaching the podium, Reagan remarked,  "I hope you'll forgive me, but we have quite a few young folks in the White House who all wanted me to give you the same message. They said to tell Michael, "Please give some TLC to the PYTs."[86] A reference to Jackson's Grammy Award-nominated song, "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)". Reagan also stated that Jackson "is proof of what a person can accomplish through a lifestyle free of alcohol or drug abuse. People young and old respect that. And if Americans follow his example, then we can face up to the problem of drinking and driving, and we can, in Michael's words, beat it."[85][86]

In April 1990, Jackson returned to the White House to be recognized as "Artist of the Decade" by President George H. W. Bush.[87] Two years later, on May 1, 1992, President Bush presented Jackson with an award acknowledging him as "a point of light ambassador".[87][88] Jackson received the award in recognition for his efforts in inviting disadvantaged children to his Neverland Ranch.[88] Jackson was the only entertainer to receive the award.[88]

Soul Train Awards

The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show aired in national television syndication that honors the best in Black music and entertainment. It is produced by the makers of Soul Train, the program from which it takes its name, and features musical performances by various R&B and hip hop music recording artists interspersed throughout the ceremonies.

Jackson won six competitive trophies and was honored with four special awards, including the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year and the Heritage Award for Career Achievement at the 1989 ceremony. In 1995, the awards show inducted him into their Hall of Fame.[24] In 1997, the video award was renamed the "Michael Jackson Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video" until 2004 where it was renamed in honor of Berry Gordy until the category was removed before the 2008 show. Since 2011, it's been presented as simply "Video of the Year".

On November 2, 1995, Jackson was one of several performers to take part in The Soul Train 25th Anniversary Hall of Fame Special, alongside Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, MC Hammer, Patti LaBelle and Bill Withers. Jackson performed "Dangerous" and "You Are Not Alone" during that telecast. It was Jackson's second televised performance that year less than two months after he performed at the MTV Video Music Awards that year. Jackson was one of several inductees alongside Ross, Houston, LaBelle, Withers, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.

Jackson is only one of two artists to win the Sammy Davis Jr. Entertainer of the Year honor twice, first in 1989 and then in 2009 following his death that year. Beyoncé won it twice, one as member of Destiny's Child and later as a solo artist. After Jackson won the posthumous honor, which was accepted by his surviving brother Jermaine, however, the award was discontinued.

Notes

  1. Awarded to Satellite Films and 525 Post Production.
  2. In 1986, Jackson netted a deal with Pepsi worth between $12-15 million. It was once held as the most successful payout for a commercial spokesperson until the mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s when superstars such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé and 50 Cent began to make upwards of $50 million off commercial endorsements. Jackson's record is broken.
  3. Jackson's all-time Wembley record of 504,000 in 1988 was outdone in 2011 by the singing group Take That, who performed at Wembley Stadium for eight consecutive nights performing in front of a record 623,737 people, plus during Jackson's tour, he performed five consecutive nights on July 14, 15, 16, 22, and 23, then after stops in Wales, Ireland, Spain, France and Germany, he returned to Wembley for the last two nights on August 26 and 27, 1988.
  4. Jackson possibly held this record until Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveShow in 2006 when the tour grossed over $126.8 million worldwide, topping the $125 million set by Jackson in 1989. Since then, other male solo artists such as Roger Waters, Justin Bieber, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney and Bruno Mars have had tours that have grossed more money than Jackson did. The record has since been claimed by Ed Sheeran, who leads among all solo artists and artists in general with his ÷ Tour in 2019.
  5. Though he was listed in Guinness' book as the youngest chart-topper in 1999, in recent years, this was corrected to Stevie Wonder, who as a solo artist, first topped the charts with "Fingertips" in 1963 when he was just 13. Jackson's first solo chart-topper, "Ben", hit number one in October 1972, two months after he turned 14.
  6. This record is likely now broken by Mariah Carey, who like Jackson, also records R&B music, as well as pop. Her recent number one was "All I Want for Christmas is You", which topped the Billboard Hot 100, on December 21, 2019. Jackson's span lasted 22 years and 19 days between "Ben" on October 14, 1972 and "You Are Not Alone" on September 2, 1995. Mariah's span is longer at 29 years and 139 days.[58]
  7. The record now belongs to Pharrell Williams' "Happy".
  8. Although Guinness World Records mentioned 26 wins, according to the American Music Awards' database, he is only credited with 24.
  9. Jackson lost his record to Eminem and R. Kelly.
  10. Since the record was set in 2011, Jackson posthumously placed two more top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 including "Love Never Felt So Good" in 2014 and "Don't Matter to Me" with Drake in 2018.
  11. It's been reported that the estimated audience was 500 million worldwide in 27 countries though the number is just an estimate.
  12. This award would've went to Rod Temperton had "Thriller" won in this category.
  13. Shared with Michael Peters.
  14. Credited to Jackson, Gregg Burge and Jeffrey Daniel.
  15. Credited to Jackson and Vincent Paterson.
  16. Credited to Jackson and Vincent Paterson.
  17. Since this award came after Jackson's death, the award did not go directly to him so it won't count to his awards tally.
