Pamaria

Pamaria / Abbasi (Hindi: पमरीया پاماریہ / अब्बासी عباسي) basically known as Pamiri are a Muslim community found in the state of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan in India, and In the Terai region of Nepal. [1]

Origin

The Pamaria are said to be Muslim converts from the Parmar Rajput community. This conversion is said to have taken place during the rule of the Mugal Emperor Akbar. They are also said to be associated with Sakib Clan of Saudi Arabia. That's why, They use of Abbasi (Abul Aasbin Abbas from Sakib Clan of Madina used to play Rabab and Daf occasionally.) title in his/her name. Tracing their lineage from famous respected historical family shows sanskritisation in Muslims too. They are also known as Sheikh Abbasi. The Pamaria are then said to have left Rajasthan, their own original home, and moved to Bihar and Nepal. When in Bihar, the community took the occupation as professional singers. The Pamaria speak Pamari language, Urdu, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Maithili and Nepali.[1] Some Pamaria are also found in (Gaya) Bihar. Sherghati, Aurangabad, Hunterganj (Chatra) Jharkhand.

History

According to some Historians, Dhund, Bhisti and some Pamaria have been migrated in Pakistan during the division of India and Pakistan. They are known as Sheikh Abbasi and found in some of the provinces like Sindh, Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Balochistan, Lahore etc. Sheikh Abbasi descended of Abbasi dynasty and they came to India as Trader (Saudagar) of Diamond spice. It's said according to circumstances they splited into three categories. 'Dhund Abbasi' which mainly found in Pakistan and acted as Trader (Saudagar).'Bhisti Abbasi' They adopted the profession of water carrying. 'Pamaria Abbasi' They adopted the profession of Rubab Player and Folk Singer in the King of Landlord court. After the ablishion of Landlord (Jamindari) system by British Empire they began roaming place to place at wedding and birth and started singing Folk Songs as well.

During the rule of Akbar Emperor They were worked as spy. They used to visit different places by singing folk songs and found out essential mysterious for the king court.

Present circumstances

The Pamaria are found mainly in the districts of Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Begusarai, Siwan, Chhapra, Jharkhand, East Champaran, West Champaran, Buxsar, Baliya, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Patna, etc. And, Most of Pamaria are found in the Terai region of Nepal in some districts such as Siraha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, Chitwan, Makwanpur, Kapilvastu, Jhapa, Morang, Mustang, etc. Their occupation remains singing and dancing, with the Pamaria visiting households at special occasions such as weddings and births. They are also employed to singing folk songs by villagers. Their important songs are the badhaiya, sohar, nachari and samdaun. Each Pamaria family are allocated a particular area by the community. Many about 70% Pamaria have given up their traditional occupation and are wage labourers, Some of them are even landowners (Jamindar). They are also active in doing business like Marwari (Ethics). They are mainly involved in Garment Manufacturing, Textile, Pharmacy, Medical etc. The Pamaria are active in Politics too.

Pamaria are well educated too. They give their first priority to Islamic education. Some number of Pamaria send their children to abroad for study. Such as US, UK, Bangladesh, Russia, Japan and in many countries across the world.

The Pamaria are strictly endogamous, and consist are number of lineages, who trace their origin from a common ancestry. They are Sunni Muslims, and like other Bihari Muslims visit shrines of various Sufis such as the shrine of Malik Biya in Bihar Sharif.

Education

According to the 2011 Census, male literacy rate of the community is 39% and 13.1% for female. The community is categorised as OBC under education quota system.
