Arab states–Israeli alliance against Iran

The Arab-Israeli alliance against Iran,[6][3][7] also known as Israeli–Sunni Coalition,[8][9] or Israeli–Sunni Alliance,[10] is an anti-Iranian unofficial coalition in Western Asia, nurtured by the United States.[11] The coordination is taking place in light of the mutual regional security interests of Israel and mostly Sunni Arab States led by Saudi Arabia,[12] and their standoff against Iranian interests across the Middle East - the Iran–Israel proxy conflict and the Iran–Saudi Arabia proxy conflict. The Arab states participating in the coordination group are the core of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Those include Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Oman.[3]

In 2020, as part of the Abraham Accords, the United Arab Emirates,[13] Bahrain,[14] Sudan,[15] and Morocco[16] normalized relations with Israel, citing Iranian threats to the region as a factor.

History

The roots of the alliance are believed to have started in the 2000s, due to the decreasing importance of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict as a wedge issue and mutual tensions with Iran.[17] By 2016 GCC states have sought strengthened economic and security cooperation with Israel, who is involved in its own proxy conflict with Iran.[18]

The coalition emerged by November 2017,[19] upon warming ties between Israel and the Gulf States and received broad media attention in light of the February 2019 Warsaw Conference.[20]
