Miss Universe 2017

Miss Universe 2017, the 66th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 26 November 2017 at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Iris Mittenaere of France crowned her successor Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa at the end of the event.[3][4]

The show was hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashley Graham, while Fergie and Rachel Platten performed.[5] Carson Kressley joined runway coach and pageant expert Lu Sierra in the commentary and analysis table throughout the telecast.[6]

Contestants from 92 countries and territories participated in this year's pageant, surpassing the previous record of 89 contestants in 2011 and 2012.

Australian businessman Troy Barbagallo of Miss Universe Australia organization told the Herald Sun newspaper that he made an offer to IMG for Australia to host the 2017 edition with possible host cities to be either Sydney and Melbourne.[7][8]

On 25 May 2017, the Philippine Department of Tourism stated that the Miss Universe Organization offered to host the pageant again in the Philippines. The country hosted the Miss Universe 2016 pageant. The Miss Universe Organization was accordingly pleased with the Philippines' hosting of the previous pageant claiming it overshadowed the pre-events of the 2017 Super Bowl.[9] On 22 June 2017, the DOT announced that they will not host the pageant this year and considered the possibility of hosting the next edition instead.[10]

On 28 September 2017, the Miss Universe Organization via Instagram confirmed the date and venue for the pageant. According to their Instagram page, the pageant is going to be held on Sunday, November 26, 2017, in The AXIS theatre of Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, United States.[11]

Program

Contestants were classified under three geographical regions namely (1) The Americas, (2) Europe, and (3) Africa & Asia-Pacific for the first time in this edition. The judges voted for the top 4 candidates from each of the three regions as well as four other candidates regardless of geographical affiliation to advance to the Top 16 round. The remaining 16 candidates competed in a swimsuit competition with 10 of them advancing to the Top 10 for the evening gown competition. Five advances to the Top 5. The audience of the pageant contributed to the scoring of candidates through an online vote to determine those who advance to the Top 10 and Top 5. The question and answer format are followed for the Top 5 and Top 3 round.[15]

  •  Greece: Maria Psilou reigning queen of "Star Hellas 2017", did not compete in Miss Universe, since she was sent to Miss World 2017, and was not supplied.
  •  Sierra Leone: Adama Kargbo was unable to join the concentration of "Miss Universe 2017" since the US embassy in her country did not grant her the corresponding VISA in time to present herself.[84]

Substitutions

  •  Belgium: Romanie Schotte did not competed in this edition because, as the titular queen, she choose to compete at Miss World 2017, so Liesbeth Claus, third finalist of the national contest, took her place.
  •  Bulgaria: Mira Simeonova did not competed because she does not have the minimum age that Miss Universe requires. So Nikoleta Todorova, first runner-up of the national contest, took her place.
  •  Russia: Polina Popova did not compete in this edition of the pageant, because she is competing in Miss World 2017, so Ksenia Aleksandrova, first runner-up of the national pageant, takes her place.
  •  Turkey: The 'Miss Turkey Organization' dethroned the original winner, Itir Esen, after discovering a tweet of her authorship in which she mocked those killed in the Status of 2016; therefore Aslı Sümen, original representative to Miss Universe 2017 took the title and the representation to Miss World 2017. Pınar Tartan, compete in Miss Universe.

Designations

  •  Costa Rica: Elena Correa was appointed by the "Miss Costa Rica Organization" to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe, after being the First Finalist in the 2016 national pageant, since the national pageant for 2017 was not held.
  •  Curaçao: Nashaira Balentien was appointed by the "Miss Curaçao Organization" to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe, after being a national queen but not competing in Miss World 2016.
  •  Mauritius: Angie Callychurn was chosen, after an interview with a jury, from among the contestants for the national title who will compete for 2018; thus, she was appointed by «Estrella Mauritius» to represent her country in Miss Universe 2017.
  •    Nepal: Nagma Shrestha was appointed as the first representative of her country in Miss Universe by "The Hidden Treasures Miss Nepal Organization", after that company acquired the license for the Asian country.
  •  Peru: Prissila Howard was appointed by Jéssica Newton, director of the organization "Miss Peru", to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe, after being First Finalist in the 2016 national pageant, because the national pageant for 2017 did not was carried out.
  •  Poland: Kasia Wlodarek was appointed by the "Miss Poland Organization" to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe, after being Second Finalist in the 2016 national pageant and given the impossibility of crowning a new queen, as Miss Poland 2017 was scheduled for November 26.
  •  Sri Lanka: Christina Peiris was appointed by the "Miss Universe Sri Lanka Organization" to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe.
  •  Uruguay: Marisol Acosta was chosen to represent her nation after the national contest did not take place.
  •  Vietnam: Loan Nguyen was appointed by the "Miss Universe Vietnam Organization" to represent her country in this edition of Miss Universe, after the national pageant changed its date for December.

BULGARIA — Mira Simeonova, Miss Universe Bulgaria 2017 was replaced by Nikoleta Todorova by Veneta Krasteva, the license holder for Miss Universe in Bulgaria after Simeonova did not meet the minimum age requirements for Miss Universe pageant. Todorova was a finalist at the Miss World and Miss Universe Bulgaria 2017 pageants.
    4. COSTA RICA – Elena Correa was appointed to represent Costa Rica at Miss Universe 2017 after the national pageant was postponed by René Picado, the President of Teletica networks and the franchise holder for Miss Universe in Costa Rica due to complications in its broadcasting schedule. Elena was the 1st runner-up at the Miss Costa Rica 2016 pageant.
    5. CURAÇAO – Nashaira Balentien was appointed Miss Curacao Universe 2017 by Corinne Djaoen-Genaro, the national director of Miss Curacao pageant after this year's edition was not held due to lack of sponsorships. Balentien was crowned Miss Curacao World 2016 but withdrew from the Miss World 2016 pageant citing personal reasons.
    6. GEORGIA — Marita Gogodze was appointed to represent Georgia at Miss Universe 2017 pageant by IC Model Management, the franchise holder for Miss World in Georgia after the national pageant was not held for undisclosed reasons. Gogodze was the 3rd runner-up at the Miss Georgia 2015 pageant.
    7. IRAQ — Sarah Idan was selected as Miss Universe Iraq 2017 in a casting call that was organised by Miss Iraq Organization after it was discovered that the original winner of Miss Iraq, Vian Sulaimani, was married. Idan was also previously crowned Miss Iraq USA 2016.[46]
    8. LEBANON — Jana Sader was appointed to represent Lebanon at Miss Universe 2017 by MTV Lebanon, after being appointed the new franchise holder for Miss Universe in Lebanon. Jana was the 1st Runner-up at Miss Lebanon 2017.
    9. MAURITIUS — Angie Callychurn was selected Miss Universe Mauritius 2017 by Nevin Rupear, the national director of Estrella Mauritius pageant after the contestants of Estrella Mauritius 2017 pageant were interviewed by a jury panel. Estrella Mauritius 2017 pageant is postponed to mid March 2018 and all the other remaining contestants will now proceed to compete at the pageant. Callychurn was crowned Miss Supranational Mauritius 2016 and was placed among the Top 25 at Miss Supranational 2016 pageant.
    10. NEPAL — Nagma Shrestha was appointed Miss Nepal Universe 2017 by Sunder Lal Kakshapati, the national director of Miss Nepal pageant after Kakshapati acquired the Miss Universe franchise for Nepal. Shrestha was crowned Miss Nepal Earth 2012 and was among the Top 8 at Miss Earth 2012 pageant.[57]
    11. PERU — Priscila Howard was appointed Miss Perú 2017 by Jessica Newton, the national director of Miss Perú pageant after this year's edition was postponed to late October. Howard was the 1st runner-up at the Miss Perú 2016 pageant and later competed at Miss Grand International 2016 where she made it to the Top 20.
    12. POLAND — Katarzyna Włodarek was appointed Miss Universe Poland 2017 by Jagoda Piatek-Wlodarcyzk, the national director of Miss Polonia pageant after this year's edition was postponed to be held in late November after the Miss Universe pageant. Włodarek was the 2nd runner-up at Miss Polonia 2016 pageant.
    13. RUSSIA — Ksenia Alexandrova was appointed Miss Universe Russia 2017 by the Miss Russia Organization as a replacement for Polina Popova, the winner of the Miss Russia 2017 pageant, who would compete only at Miss World 2017 due to the conflicting dates of the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants. The winner of the Miss Russia pageant usually participates at both Miss Universe and Miss World pageants. Alexandrova represented Moscow at Miss Russia 2017 and was the 1st runner-up at the pageant.[69]
    14. SRI LANKA — Christina Peiris was appointed Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2017 after a private casting call organised by Rosita Wickramasinghe, the national director of Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant.
    15. TURKEY — Asli Sümen, Miss Turkey Universe 2017, was replaced by Pinar Tartan, Miss Turkey Supranational 2017 by Can Sandikcioglu, the national director of Miss Turkey pageant, after Itir Esen, Miss Turkey World 2017, was dethroned hours after her crowning because of a tweet about the attempted Turkish coup d'état of 2016. Sümen was sent to the Miss World 2017 pageant, while Tartan was sent to Miss Universe.[80]
    16. URUGUAY — Marisol Acosta was appointed as Miss Universo Uruguay 2017 by Escuela de Modelos y Actitud Agency and TNT Latin America, the franchise holders for Miss Universe in Uruguay after the 2017 edition of the pageant was not held for undisclosed reason . Acosta was a contestant in the Miss Universo Uruguay 2016 pageant.
    17. VIETNAM — Nguyễn Thị Loan was appointed Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 by Tony Nguyen Quoc Toan, the national director of Miss Universe Vietnam pageant after the 2017 edition of the national pageant conflicted with the date of the Miss Universe pageant. Loan was 3rd runner-up at the Miss Universe Vietnam 2015 pageant and has previously represented Vietnam at Miss World 2014 reaching the Top 25 and Miss Grand International 2016 where she placed among the Top 20.
