Cardiff, Alberta

Cardiff is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada within Sturgeon County.[1] It is located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) east of Highway 2, approximately 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of Edmonton's city limits. The Town of Morinville is 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi) to the west of Cardiff.

History


It was named after the prominent coal-mining centre of Cardiff, Wales, due to the large number of coal mines in the area.[2]

Cardiff's coal mines were the scene of violence-ridden strikes in 1922.[3] Cardiff's shipping trade in 1912 was the largest on record for the community, with approx. 12,500,000 tons in trade. Imports exceeded 2,000,000 tons while exports were 10,400,000. [4]

Demographics

The population of Cardiff according to Sturgeon County's 2008 municipal census is 1,190.[5]
