Edward Chia

Edward Chia Bing Hui (Chinese: 谢秉辉) is a Singaporean politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Holland–Bukit Timah GRC for Zhenghua since 10 July 2020. Additionally, he is the Co-founder and Managing Director of Timbre Group. He also currently serves as the Co-chair of the National Environment Agency (NEA) work group on sustaining the hawker trade.

Chia has been known to support and develop Singaporean musicians and culinary talents since 2005.[1] Concurrent to his professional capacity of managing Timbre Group, he is currently a council member of the Ngee Ann Polytechnic, National Youth Achievement Award Council and a board member of SMU Enterprise and NP Enterprise Pte Ltd.

Background

At the age of 18, Chia founded the non-profit organisation Arts For Us All (AFUA),[2] now defunct, engaging youths in arts-based community work and events. He continued to run AFUA during his National Service. At 21, Chia co-founded Timbre with Danny Loong (then named the Ublues Group[3]) while pursuing his undergraduate studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Two years later, he became the Managing Director of the Group. He graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts in Economics from the National University of Singapore. 

In 2010, Chia, together with the Group’s other Co-Founder Danny Loong, was conferred the Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year award[4] under the Singapore Tourism Board’s Singapore Experience Awards. In 2011, he was awarded Outstanding Young Alumni by NUS. He became a recipient of the Singapore Youth Award[5] in 2014. In the same year, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Singapore honoured Chia as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World[6] under the Business, Economic, and/or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment category. Chia also received the ASEAN Youth Award[7] at the 21st Youth Day Meeting in 2016. 

Politics

Chia was fielded in 2020 Singaporean general election to contest in Holland–Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on People's Action Party's ticket against Singapore Democratic Party.[8] Chia's running mates were Vivian Balakrishnan, Sim Ann, and Christopher de Souza.[8] On 11 July 2020, Tan and team were declared to be elected to represent Holland–Bukit Timah GRC in the 14th Parliament of Singapore, garnering 66.36% of the valid votes. He was then appointed Deputy Chairperson of Manpower Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) in the 14th Parliament of Singapore. [9]
