Alvin Tan (politician)

Alvin Tan Sheng Hui (simplified Chinese: 陈圣辉; traditional Chinese: 陳聖輝; pinyin: Chén Shènghuì; born 30 June 1980) is a Singaporean politician. He was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry for Trade and Industry since 1 September 2020 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He is serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC for Moulmein-Cairnhill since 10 July 2020 after the 2020 Singaporean general election.

Education

Tan holds a First Class bachelor's degree in economics from Sydney University and a Master in public policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.[1] where he was awarded the 2009 International and Global Affairs Fellowship from the Belfer Centre of Science and International Affairs. He later revealed that he was not qualified to study at any local universities.[1]

Career

Following his graduation, Tan has been involved in various organisations, such as the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), United Nations (UN), Goldman Sachs and non-profit Oxfam.[1] He also worked at Facebook and LinkedIn.[1] At LinkedIn, he was the Head of Public Policy & Economics for the Asia-Pacific region.[2]

Political career

Tan used to work under Lily Neo when Neo was still an MP.[2]

In the 2020 Singaporean general election, he was selected as a candidate of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC, replacing the incumbent Melvin Yong who moved to Radin Mas SMC.[2] His team was challenged by a team from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP). The PAP team won the election with 63.13% of the votes.[3]

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on 25 July that he will helming MCCY and MTI from 1 September 2020.
