He Ting Ru

He Ting Ru (Chinese: 何廷儒; pinyin: Hé Tíngrú; born 16 June 1983) is a Singaporean politician, lawyer, and a member of the Worker's Party. She is serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) of Sengkang GRC for Buangkok following the 2020 general election, defeating the People’s Action Party team led by then-Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Ng Chee Meng. She was elected as the Workers’ Party Central Executive Committee as Deputy Organizing Secretary.[4][5] She was appointed as the chairman of Sengkang Town Council.

Early life

He Ting Ru was educated at CHIJ Saint Nicholas Girls' School and Raffles Junior College. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University before reading law in London.[6]

Political career

He Ting Ru began volunteering with the Workers' Party (WP) in the Paya Lebar division in 2011.[7] She was fielded as part of the 5-person team in the 2015 general election in Marine Parade GRC where the team garnered 35.9% of the polled votes[8] as she lost to the PAP team there, including Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin and former Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

She previously served as Secretary of the Workers' Party Youth Wing, and oversees the Youth Wing's outreach efforts in the areas of Service, Education and Heritage.[9]

At the 2020 general election, He Ting Ru stood as a candidate in Sengkang GRC.[10] On 11 July 2020, she was elected as a Member of the 14th Parliament of Singapore, representing Sengkang GRC.[11]

Since 2013, He Ting Ru has been Head of Legal and Communications of a listed multinational company which oversees legal and communications matters in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa.[12]

She trained and qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales with the Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance, working in London and Frankfurt, before joining a European financial institution in Singapore as a derivatives lawyer.[13][14]

Personal life

She married fellow WP member Terence Tan in January 2016. He Ting Ru and her husband were both part of the WP team contesting Marine Parade GRC in 2015. Together, they have three sons.[15][16]
