List of power stations in Wisconsin

This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, sorted by type and name. In 2019, Wisconsin had a total summer capacity of 15,312 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 66,774 GWh.[2] The corresponding electrical energy generation mix was 42.0% coal, 32.4% natural gas, 16.0% nuclear, 4.2% hydroelectric, 3.0% wind, and 2.1% biomass (including refuse-derived fuel). Petroleum (0.2%) and solar (0.1%) facilities generated most of the remainder. Small-scale solar, including customer-owned photovoltaic panels, delivered an additional net 101 GWh to the state's electricity grid. This was more than twice the generation by Wisconsin's utility-scale PV plants.[1]

Sources of Wisconsin electricity generation: full-year 2019 [1]

  Coal (42.0%)
  Natural Gas (32.4%)
  Hydroelectric (4.2%)
  Wind (3.0%)
  Nuclear (16.0%)
  Biomass (2.1%)
  Solar (0.1%)
  Petroleum (0.2%)

The Fox River powered the world's first commercial hydroelectric central power station, the Vulcan Street Plant, during 1882 to 1891.[3] An exact replica of the plant, designated as a National Historic Engineering Landmark, is located near the original site in Appleton.[4] Wisconsin also has the nation's oldest (since 1891) continuously operating hydroelectric facility in Whiting according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.[5]

During the first half of the 20th century, Wisconsin's utility companies pioneered efficiency improvements for coal-fired electricity generation at the former East Wells (Onieda) Street Power Plant,[6] and former Port Washington Power Plant.[7] Nuclear power has generated Wisconsin's largest share of carbon-free electrical energy since 1970.[8] Natural gas generation has nearly quadrupled over the past decade to replace retiring facilities and satisfy rising demand.[9]
