Robertson, Queensland

Robertson is an outer southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.[3] In the 2016 census, Robertson had a population of 4,973 people.[1]

Geography

Robertson is 13.7 kilometres (9 mi) by road south of the Brisbane CBD.[4]

Robertson is loosely bounded by Kessels Road to the north, Mains Road to the east, Mccullough Street to the south, and Troughton Road to the west, but excludes the Sunnybank Plaza Shopping Centre to the south-east.[5]

The land use is almost entirely residential.[5]

History

Robertson was named on 1 August 1967 by the Queensland Place Names Board in memory of Doctor William Nathaniel Robertson who was a member of the University of Queensland Senate.[4]

Robertson State School opened on 29 January 1980 with 124 students.[6][7][8] The Robertson State Preschool Centre opened two weeks later with an initial enrolment of 26.[9] The school was officially opened by the Minister for Education, Val Bird, and by 1987 it had 600 students on roll.[9]

At the 2011 census Robertson had a population of 4,867 people.[10]

In the 2016 census, Robertson had a population of 4,973 people.[1]

Education

Robertson State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at 688 Musgrave Road (27.5654°S 153.0562°E / -27.5654; 153.0562 (Robertson State School)).[11][12] In 2017, the school had an enrolment of 727 students with 51 teachers (45 full-time equivalent) and 34 non-teaching staff (20 full-time equivalent).[13] It includes a special education program.[11]

There are no secondary schools in Robertson. The nearest secondary schools are Sunnybank State High School in Sunnybank to the south and MacGregor State High School in MacGregor to the east.[5]

Demographics

In the 2011 census, the population of Robertson was 4,867, 50.7% female and 49.3% male.[10]

The median age of the Robertson population was 32 years, 5 years below the Australian median.

34.7% of people living in Robertson were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 69.8%; the next most common countries of birth were China 12.6%, Taiwan 9.6%, India 5.4%, Hong Kong 3.1%, Malaysia 3%.

36.7% of people spoke only English at home; the next most common languages were 23.5% Mandarin, 7.6% Cantonese, 2.3% Vietnamese, 2.1% Arabic, 2% Korean.
