Rural Municipality of Old Post No. 43

The Rural Municipality of Old Post No. 43 (2016 population: 377) is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within Census Division No. 3 and SARM Division No. 2. It is located in the southern portion of the province adjacent to the United States border, neighbouring Valley County and Daniels County in Montana.

History

The RM of Old Post No. 43 incorporated as a rural municipality on January 1, 1967.[2]

Heritage properties

There is one heritage building located within the RM.

  • Elm Springs Roumanian Orthodox Church - Constructed in 1926, the church is in the Elma Springs area. Originally constructed by Roumanian immigrants and originally called the Ascension of Our Lord Church it played an important role in the community. Today it is only used for a few services per year.[5]

In the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the RM of Old Post No. 43 recorded a population of 377 living in 151 of its 171 total private dwellings, a -4.6% change from its 2011 population of 395. With a land area of 1,757 km2 (678 sq mi), it had a population density of 0.2/km2 (0.6/sq mi) in 2016.[4]

In the 2011 Census of Population, the RM of Old Post No. 43 recorded a population of 395, a 0.3% change from its 2006 population of 394. With a land area of 1,757 km2 (678 sq mi), it had a population density of 0.2/km2 (0.6/sq mi) in 2011.[8]

Government

The RM of Old Post No. 43 is governed by an elected municipal council and an appointed administrator that meets on the second Thursday of every month.[3] The reeve position is vacant while the RM's administrator is Vickie Greffard.[3] The RM's office is located in Wood Mountain.[3]

Transportation

The RM is a part owner of the Fife Lake Railway.[16]
