Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) is an autonomous country (Danish: land) of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is not part of the Schengen Area, and Schengen visa or resident permits issued by Schengen area countries are not valid for visiting Greenland. The territory maintains an open border with the Schengen Area and so arrivals from the Schengen Area are not subject to border checks. A special visa for Greenland can be obtained in consular establishments of the Kingdom of Denmark. The conditions are similar to the conditions for the Danish visa. Greenlandic visas are not valid for visiting Denmark.[1]

Passport checks

All arrivals from countries outside of the Nordic Passport Union and Schengen area have their passports checked. For internal European travel some people are exempt from having their passport checked when entering Greenland, these exemptions include:[2]

  • Danish citizens travelling directly to Greenland from Denmark.
  • Citizens from the Nordic Passport Union (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland) travelling to Greenland from the Nordic countries.
  • Citizens from countries participating in the Schengen agreement travelling to Greenland from a Schengen country. (Icelandic, Liechtenstein, Norwegian and Swiss citizens, and all EU citizens excluding Irish citizens)

Ireland is not part of the Schengen agreement therefore Irish passports or ID cards are required to be checked.

National ID card travel to Greenland

Greenland allows citizens of certain countries to enter on a national identity card or in some cases any photo identification, these citizens include:

  • All Nordic citizens may enter with a national ID card (or, when arriving from a Nordic country, any photo identification).
  • All citizens of countries that make up the Schengen area may enter with a national ID card.
  • Irish citizens may enter using their passport card instead of a passport booklet.
