COVID-19 vaccination in Romania

COVID-19 vaccination in Romania started on 27 December 2020. It was announced that the process would be divided into three phases. Medical personnel would be vaccinated first (first phase), followed by the population at risk (second phase) and finally by the rest of the population (third phase).[1] It was also said that Romania would obtain a total of 10 million Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine units, receiving 140,000 doses each week. The first person to be vaccinated in the country was Mihaela Anghel, a nurse at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases "Matei Balș" of Bucharest, at 9:00 am. Anghel was among the personnel that treated the country's first infected person on 27 February of the same year. After getting the vaccine, she declared: "I was excited. I was privileged to be the first person to be vaccinated in this country. It is the least painful vaccine I have ever had. I feel and hope to be the start of the end of this pandemic."[2]

On 29 December, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced that Romania would help Moldova with a donation of 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine units in the future during his meeting with the Moldovan President Maia Sandu in the country.[3] Iohannis himself was vaccined on 15 January 2021.[4] Nevertheless, as of 1 February 2021, Moldova has not started yet its vaccination campaign, although it expects to do so at the middle of the same month.[5]

As of 3 February 2021, at 18:30, 620,176 Romanian citizens had been vaccinated. Of these, 468,150 had only received the first dose and 152,026 had also received the second and last one.[6]
