International reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy
In response to the spread of the 2020–2021 COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, many countries and regions have imposed quarantine measures or entry bans for citizens or tourists from Italy.
Chronology
On the evening of 23 February 2020, Austria suspended all trains to and from Italy for a couple of hours due to suspected cases of COVID-19.[1][2]
Romania has simultaneously set up a quarantine for Italian citizens arriving from Lombardy and Veneto.[3]
Alitalia flight AZ 772, which took off on the evening of 23 February 2020 from Rome and headed to Mauritius, was stopped by the Mauritian authorities who requested the mandatory quarantine or the repatriation of passengers from Lombardy and Veneto, even if without symptoms.[4][5]
Following the positive result of the swab on an Italian doctor on holiday in Tenerife, Spain, all guests of the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel in Adeje were placed in quarantine.[6]
On 25 February, Kuwait ordered the suspension of all flights from Italy, as well as from South Korea and Thailand. The United Kingdom has instead imposed mandatory self-isolation for those arriving from Northern Italy (north of Pisa, Florence and Rimini).[7]
From 25 February, Croatia extended border health checks to people from Italian regions considered at risk. People with symptoms can be quarantined or pushed back at the border.[8] Those who have no symptoms will be obliged to carry out daily checks for 14 days.[9][10]
Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, Jordan, Iraq, Israel and Seychelles forbid entry into the national territory to those coming from Italy.[11][12]
On 28 February, Germany adopted new health security measures to include air and sea travel regulations, requiring passengers from multiple countries, including Italy, to report their health status prior to entry.[13]
On 29 February, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated Italy's situation to level 3, which recommends avoiding non-essential travel due to widespread community transmission.[14]
Many companies such as Amazon, Google, London Stock Exchange Group have postponed all non-essential travel to countries affected by major outbreaks, including Italy.[15]
